t Page B-6 - Mason County Journal - Thursday, Feb. 27,201 4 Basketball: Lady Owls will play Tulalip Heritage continued from page B-1 The Lady Owls out-rebounded Taholah, something Valley said he knew they had to do in order to have an opportunity to win. "In the second half, we'd get up a bit and they'd come back, but I knew once we got the con- fidence, we'd win," he said. "I knew we were stronger men- tally and physically." When the game went to over- time tied at 51, Adsero said she was excited. '%Ve conditioned all year for games like this and we knew we were in better shape," she said. Valley said he knew the Lady Owls had the game in overtime. "Kiliz hit two 3's and Adsero made some big buckets," he said. "Adsero and Lauren Dierkop also did a magnificient job on (Tahol- ah sophomore Nichole Hildalgo), limiting her to one bucket." The Lady Owls entered over- time without one of their best scorers, however. Sowle, a jtmior, fouled out of the game with about 4 minutes remaining in regulation. 'When you have one starter foul out and two of three guards with four fouls ... I was real nervous," Valley said. "I knew as long as the rest of the crew didn't foul out, we'd be OK." Adsero said she thought the Lady Owls wanted the champi- onship more than Taholah did. "We thought about last year and how Taholah won (in the districtualifying game) and we said, fflaat's nothappening again,' " Adsero said. "We over- came adversity in this game, too," Journal photo by Emily Hanson Mary M. Knight junior Lauren Dierkop comes up against a Taholah player while attempting a shot Saturday at the 1B Southwest District IV Championship at Montesano High School. Not only did the team play overtime without Sowle, but Dierkop fouled out with 49 seconds in overtime and junior Kayla Kiliz twisted her ankle during warm-ups. "We're always really focused before the game on our sched- ule and our warm-ups," Adsero said. "Right as we were warm- ing up, one of our wings twisted her ankle. That got us shook up, Adsero "We cond[t[oned alt year for games |ike th00s 2' Carlie Adsero, MMK senior but we decided to win the game for her ... We wanted to make this history." Ashley Kiliz hit five 3-point shots to lead the team with 17 points. Jaycee Valley also scored 17 points and had six re- bounds and eight assists. Sowle netted 10 points in three and a half quarters and had nine as- sists and seven rebounds. Adse- ro had six points, six rebounds and six steals, while Dierkop also scored six points. Melodie Snyder contributed five points. Valley said this was the sec- ond game of the season when the Lady owls had more assists than turnovers. The Lady Owls will continue on to play in the regionals of the 1B WIAA Girls' Hardwood Clas- sic. Their first game is at 4 p.m. Saturday against Tulalip Heri- tage at Tumwater High School.
