Many homeowners are discouraged ~th plain, drab
front entries, bleakly open to the street. Their lawns are
scarred with shortcut trails, and shrubs are trampled by
children and dogs bee-lining for the doorway. But never
fear: the cure is here.
The common concrete slab and dinky overhang can be
transformed into an attractive entry that guides callers to
the door. It's as simple as constructing a divider screen and
installing benches or planters to point the way. Possibilities
for screen design are unlimited. A basic framework can be
made by attaching a 4x4-inch
western wood post to the over-
hang at the edge of the slab
and connecting it to the wall
beside the doorway.
A simple screening of 2x2-
inch lumber, evenly spaced, al-
lows air and light to penetrate
but defines and shields the door-
way. A louvered screen is at-
tractive, but is more compli-
cated to construct.
Screen Protects Plants
Where a shield against weath-
er is desirable, a solid screen
of butted boards is a good
choice.
Some entries look well dressed
up with more intricate designs,
using boards of varying width
set in a pattern, or more widely
spaced uprights with a design
of panel insets.
The privacy screen is a good
backdrop for shrubs and vines,
which it protects by re-directing
foot traffic.

Simple Shield Enriches Entry
Plain entry becomes distinctive through simple addition of privacy
shield and benches, which point to entry, protect yard from foot traffic.
Screen is made of 2x2-inch western lumber attached to 2x4 horizontals.
Benches are 2x4s on edge, spaced for drainage.

practical way oi finishing floors.
Once relegated to the living
room, it has now moved
throughout the home and is
now suitable for any floor area
including bathrooms, laundry
rooms, kitchens, play areas and
other almost unheard of places
-----even walls.
To avoid boredom in the old
concept of "wall-to-wall carpet-
ing", many decorators and arch-
itects are coordinating different
areas with entirely different pile
fibers in like or dissimilar pat-
terns and prints. By using con-
trasting colors or contrasting
types of carpet one can desig-
nate particular areas.
Perfect Coordinators
Shag and cut pile can be per-
fect coordinators for practical
and functional reasons as well
as for creation of mood and
atmosphere.
Functionally, cut pile is ex-
tremely good for heavily trav-
eled areas such as halls, stairs
and entrances and is often used
to denote formality. With the
advent of the 5/64" gauge cut
pile carpet, hard surface areas
such as kitchens, bathrooms and
laundry rooms become alive and
warm with cttshioned comfort
and noise control. Shags, too,
are warm and inviting carpets.
They are quite good for creat-
ing a relaxing mood and are
good to use in lounges, resting
or conversation areas. Thus
with their utility established we
may examine good coordhaating
examples.
Try One of These
In a formal living room, a
cut pile may be used. Family
room, den, or library opening
off the living room could be
done in the companion shag.
An informal living area stretch-
ing into a dining area can be
beautifully coordinated with pile
carpet in dining room and shag
in living area.
Some living rooms have con-
versation pits. Shag carpeting
can be used in the pit thus set-
ting the stage for warm, inti-
mate conversation. The plush
carpet (pile) can be used around
the rest of the room.
An interesting use of the
companion cut pile and shag
carpets would be to do a music
or stereo room. Now that ear-
pets have moved to the walls,
a plush carpet could be "walled"
witb a floor done in shag.
Maay homes have kitchen
family room areas with no di-
viding walls. The cut piles can
be used in kitchen area and the
dining area and the companion
shag can be used in the seating
area. Thus, you have used car-
pet to take the place of walls
and physically separate the ac-
tivity areas.
Anytime one has a large area
or system of rooms that need to
be treated as a whole decora-
tively and yet need to be sepa-
rated into smaller activity or
conversational areas, cut pile
and shag companion rugs are
the answer.
Accent Rugs...
New Art Form
There's a new art form afoot
with the advent of new design
direction in accent rugs being
issued in limited editions by
some manufacturers as floor art,
created for specific settings, de-
signed to the specifications of
the individual or the designer.
These rugs are not created for
a market, but for indviduals. In
this situation, the designer has
absolute freedom. Colors are
totally unrestricted; yarns can
be skein-dyed to order, or can
come from the inventory of
many colors available.

in the Seventies. The fiber that
does everything well . . . it's
resilient, bulks beautifully . . .
now is being introduced in in-
novations like needlepunch wool
carpet which will provide a
luxurious floorcovering that is
very versatile.
Another unique process of
manufacture, an exclusive ad-
aptation of knitting, also sym-
bolizes the new affinity of fash-
ion and home fashions in the
plans for wool in the Age of
Aquarius. Several months ago,
a fleecy broadloom and rugs
shaped like sheepskins using
this new process were intro-
duced. Another first for wool,
a washable wool rug, is now
available in a flokati styling.
Other innovations for the
natural fiber include a registered
process for piece-dyed wool
which can be produced in three
colors with a single dye bath.
One dunk and voila . . . a
gorgeous tri-colored floor-c0ver-
ing! And the new wool pro-
cesses are adaptable to the latest
dyeing techniques in all con-
structions like shag, loop and
plush.
