I ann ng "This is a new program in a new school for a new hospital," said Robert J. Boyden, director of Olympia Vocational Technical Institute, when discussing the Practical Nursing course beginning June 14 at OVTI. For the first time in its history, OVT1 will offer a course for the practical nurse and will do so in cooperation with St. Peter Hospital and Panorama Convalescent Center. A maximum of 30 students will be enrolled in the 44-week program, and they will receive their training in the new facilities of both OVTI and St. Peter Hospital. The course, which ends May 12, 1972, includes a total of 1,540 hours of instruction and experience - approximately one third of the time in classroom theory at OVTI and the rest in actual clinical experience at the hospital and convalescent center. Theory will involve nursing skills, normal health and development, condition of illness, drugs and their administration. Clinical experience will be divided into nine different areas - medical nursing, surgical nursing, "cal urse urse care of mothers, care of newborn, pediatrics, recovery room, orthopedics, medications and geriatrics. Instructor wtl be Mrs. Ethel Clements, a registered nurse and instructor at OVTI. Coordinating the program are Mrs. Mariana Halsan, a registered nurse and supervisor of medical education at OVTI, and Mrs. Chris Hitch, a registered nurse and director of nursing services at St. Peter Hospital. Mrs. Halsari explained that the 44 weeks of training prepares the practical-nursing student for the state licensi,g examination; and upon successful completion of this examination, the student will be a Licensed Practical Nurse. "The LPN gives nursing care to patients in simple situations under the supervision of a registered professional nurse or a licensed physician and assists a registered nurse in more complex nursing situations," she explained. Persons interested in the Practical Nursing course should contact OVTI's admiriistration office on Mottman Road or call 753-3000. `-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~g = i E E RECENTLY INSTALLED was this insignia of the Puget _-= Sound National Bank showing that the transition from the ___ National Bank of Mason County to a branch of the Tacoma bank was nearly completed.
