Courtesy photo A circus of science Performers bring fun to 5helton STAFF REPORT news@masoncoun corn Come one, come all, the circus is coming to town -- the Super Scientific Circus that is. On April 16, and 17, Shelton Junior Programs will present Harmony Art- ists of Los Angeles, who will put on the Super Scientific Circus. The performances, which are open to Mason County students in first through sixth grades, are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., April 16, for first through third grades and 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., April 17, for fourth through sixth grades. All performances will take place at the Performing Arts Center at Shelton High School. The program teaches students that "science can be appreciated in every- thing we see and do," according to Su- perScientificCircus.com. During the program, students will learn how to make their own boomer- ang, will learn why a whip cracks, how to put a needle through a balloon, how ultraviolet light is different from white light, how to balance a broom in the palm of your hand, why spinning ob- jects defy gravity and why bubbles are round, according to the program. The performance includes discus- sions on physics, matter, force, motion, inertia, centrifugal and centripetal force, gravity, light, energy, sound and other topics. The Super Scientific Circus will be presented by two performers -- Mr. Fish, also known as John James Lepi- arz, and Trent Arterberry. Lepiarz is a long-time circus per- former and toured for seven years with New York's Big Apple Circus. Ar- terberry is a mime and has performed at thousands of schools, theaters and festivals, including New York's Radio City Music Hall. Shelton Junior Programs is a non- profit organization made up of volun- teers from the community. The organi- zation strives to present students with educational and entertaining programs in the fields of drama, music, science and interpretive arts.
