MARY'S MEMOIRS Thursday, April 10, 2014 - Mason County Journal - Page A-27 Mary colored Easter eggs. It sounds like they are rocking and roll- ing on building the new store. Vernon Wyatt is cutting and selling meat and of course Mary had to squeeze a couple movies in this week. Enjoy/ Thursday, April 9, 1936 Emmet got the day off. We were fairly busy. I swept up the ware- house after yesterday when Don, Sam and Emmet dug at it. They got the shelves fixed up fine but never swept. Sent out special sheets. Sent off money in money orders. Gladys Harris waived my hair and it looks very nice. A bunch of usare going to Chapter tomorrow and I want to look nice: Vernon Wyatt was here yester- By CLYDENE day. He is cutting HOSTETLER and selling meat now. My, it's blow- ing hard today. I wonder if we're going to have rain. They're pouring cement in the forms today. Charlie had to go to Port Or- chard for more cement and Don went to Shelton for lumber. Eight men are over there on the job. Quite as large a project as the new schoolhouse but more work is done. Wrote a letter to the post office department to get per- mission to move. Friday, April 10, 1936 A very busy day and Sam went to Seattle and Tacoma. Don went to Tacoma and was back early after a big load of feed. In the evening I went to Chapter with Rudy, Alma, Charles Thurnquist, Mrs. Rice and Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons The photo is of Sylvia Sidney, who starred in the movie "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," which Mary Theler saw this week in 1936. Mrs. Harley. It was a nice meeting and we surely enjoyed it. I rode home with Mitchell's as they had the most room in their car. They stopped in the house for a few minutes on their way home. To bed late. Saturday, April 11, 1936 A busy day. Started off like a house on fire and died off in the af- ternoon. Sam went down to see Pin- ky and Pete Bennettson and didn't get back until late. Sent a couple chickens to the wrong party and stopped in at Charlie Thurnquist and came home at five to 8. So he wasn't around here much. My, I'm tired. I'm certainly going to bed early tonight. Wore my flowered chiffon dress last night and it looked very nice. Elizabeth made me a dandy chocolate cake and I'm having Dad down to dinner to help eat it. Was up to see him today to get two chickens to eat tomorrow. Charlie went up af- ter them. Sunday, April 12, 1936 Slept until late and then rode up to see Alexander's new doe the game commission gave him to replace the one they took to Pullman. We stayed there to a chicken dinner that was very tasty. Then we rode up to see Emmet's new house. It surely is a beauty. Lobo almost scared Sam to death. Then to the beach where we cleaned house. I colored Easter eggs. Sam worked on his bills. Made din- ner for my dad. We had fried oysters and they were real good. Dad went home early as he had some work to do. Then Alice, Don and I went to the show. We saw Sylvia Sidney in "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" and "The Song and Dance Man." Very good. We certainly enjoyed it. Home late. Monday, April 13, 1936 A quiet day. Don hauled two loads of lumber and Sam went to Seattle in the afternoon and came back with a big load at 7:30. Put up scratch, rolled barley and compound this afternoon.. Hope to get home early if I can. Tuesday, April 14, 1936 I had two teeth ulled so went to bed early. Elizabeth took me to town in her car. Don hauled feed to De- watto. Fairly busy all day. Wednesday, April 15, 1936 Had a letter from Leonard. He has a good job at Coulee Dam. Elizabeth went to town and got me two house dresses. Erma Orr had an operation for appendicitis Monday in Shelton. Louie, Grace and Teddy were in the store tonight. Sam hired Jim Deaver to work. He is very slow. Don and Emmet called him speedball. Charlie went to town with Sam today and got several nice tools for the garden. Now he is happy. Don hauled cement all day from the barge at the head of the bay. In Mary Theler's daily diary writ- ten 78 years ago, we learn a lot about the times and culture, but there are a lot of things that are left in the air and left for our imaginations to form a conclusion. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. I want to know who Lobo was and how did he sare Sam 0 death? Thank you for reading this week's diary.
