Dash aims to raise money
STAFF REPORT
news@masoncoun com
The third Mother's Day Dash is set
to go.
The 4-mile walk/run, supported and
sponsored by many local businesses and
organizations to help fund ovarian cancer
research, will start Sunday at the Huffand
PuffTrafl across from Shelton High School.
Shelby Conklin, a longtime resident
of Shelton and two time ovarian cancer
survivor, started the dash with her fam-
ily in 2011, forming Team Nanno.
"It started with the annual walk / run
in Seattle known the 'Swedish Summe-
Run,' which raises money for the Mar-
sha Rivkin Center for ovarian cancer
research," Conklin said. "It became an
event our entire family and friends sup-
ported and became involved in."
Proceeds from the event go to the
Rivkin Center. Team Nanno hopes to
raise more than $5,000 this year.
Online signup is available through
May 9 at active.com. Cost is $20; chil-
dren under age 10 are free. Day of race
registration is available for $25. Sign-up
starts at the Huff and Puff at 7:30 a.m.
and the event will start at 8:30 a.m.
Ribbons and trophies are awarded for
age groups.
Spell: Sponsors encouraged
conffnuedfrompage A-19
Organizers are lining up financial
sponsors with the three-member spell-
ing teams, who will compete for the first-
place trophy that was won last year by
State Farm Good Neighbors, sponsored
by Melanie Bakala State Farm Insurance.
Everyone is invited to organize a team, re-
cruit a sponsor and compete Friday. Spon-
sors can also be lined up for teams.
Businesses, organizations and indi-
viduals are able to participate in a range
of sponsorships from major sponsor
($1,500 or more) to Literacy Leader ($100
to $250) and Bee Sponsors ($25 to $99). A
team sponsorship ($500) can be shared.
The event also includes a silent auc-
tion, door prizes, an appetizer and a des-
sert buffet.
For more information on Sound
Learning's programs or the Spell-E-Bra-
tion event, call the office at 426-9733.
Last yeas event attracted about
15 teams, 200 spectators and support-
ers, and raised about $11,000 for Sound
Learning programs. The winning team
of The Good Neighbors -- Nancy Evans,
Pearl Ostroff-Deloach and Susan Carlson
-- won by correctly spelling "ricochet."
Hoodsport: Chipper days
makes hauling extra easy
continued frompageA-19
For the third year, Firewise will have
Community Chipper Days. If you are
willing to help, please let me know as
soon as possible. Just two hours of your
time in helping us pick up limbs and
pass them to the person running the
chipper would really be appreciated.
The next date is May 17.
Here's the process -- you sign up.
If you don't sign up, you can't get
your loved chipped. The donation we
are asking is $20 per load. A load is
defined as 4-foot by 4-foot by 8-foot.
Remember, this is for downed limbs
that fell last year or you trimmed to
create a Firewise property. The limbs
should be 5 inches or less in diameter.
If you have larger limbs or trees, those
are considered firewood and, y.es, we
can have them removed from your
property. Just give us a call or email to
discuss.
Yes, you could load the stuffin a
pickup and drive it down to recycle it.
Let's do the math. The recyclers charge
$7 per load. Your pickup gets 10 mpg.
You pay $4 a gallon for fuel. That works
out to $31 for the trip. And don't forget,
you do all the work. So for a $20 dona-
tion, we do all the work.
To sign up, email bsostrich@gmail.
corn or call Bill Sostrich at 877-2189.
