Bruce saw a cougar up near the
new highway on Saturday. Poor
Don got teased about his back giv-
ing him havoc after taking three
girls to the show. Charlie finally got
a legal drivels license. A lot going
on in Belfair 78 years ago. Enjoy!

Don had a "crick" in his back
today so couldn't work and we
certainly razzed him about taking
three women to a show and it was
too much for him. Was his face
red? Not very busy today. Eliza-
beth ironed. Sent rhododendrons
to Capt. Kent.
Also sent cab-
bage plants
to Grandma
and a box of
stationery to
Mama. The
new store go-
ing along fine.
Sam bought a
By CLYDENE new meat case.
HOSTETLER My, I'm getting
anxious to move
in. When I get the new post office I
will have a dandy place.

A warm sunny day bdt very qui-
et. Sam went to Seattle very early
and should return any time. Now
it's 2:45 p.m. Elizabeth finished
ironing and cleaned the house at
the beach. I cleaned all the shoes
in the house. Sewed buttons on
my lavender dress. Charlie hauled
sand and cement this morning. Don
still has a sore back and a bad cold.
Charlie got his driver's license fixed
up so he can drive legally. Emmit
took him to Shelton with him and
he had a great time. I'm anxious for
Uncle Henry to come in so as to get
word from Holly.

A very busy day and nice and
warm out. Received a letter from
Ruby. The flowers arrived intact.
Alice Giles and I drove over to
Harper and got some tomato and
cabbage plants. We had a nice ride
as it was so nice and clear out. The
little Goodwin girl got a permanent
wave and her hair certainly looks
different. Gladys Harris waved
my hair and it certainly looks nice.
Bruce saw a cougar up near the
new highway today. Near Lighter
Lake District. We went to Fred
Mauls to a card party and ate some
very good barbecued beef sand-
wiches. Very nice evening.
Sunday, May 24, 1936
A hot, hot day. We got not so
much sleep as John and Annie
came early. Drove down to the
state park to see a garage Sam bid
on. Then down to see Sundstroms.
We took a big chocolate cake, cot-
tage cheese and combination salad.
Alma had fried oysters, oysters
pepper pan, corn, carrots and peas,
new potatoes, gravy, olives, pickles,
roast pork, pudding, crabs, beer,
etc. We sat outside in the open
and talked and had a fine time.
Heidemans came over and talked a
while. Home early and sat around
the beach. Elizabeth, Sam and I ate
some shrimp my mother sent over.
They were very good. Irene and
some friends came just about 9:30.
Stayed only a few minutes. Mable
and Sig have a baby boy, born Sat-
urday night. To bed early.
Monday, May 25, 1936
A very hot day. Sam and Ernie
Cox and Mr. Wilcox put the first
layer of cork on the cold box. In the
afternoon Rudy and Charlie plant-
ed the oyster seed. In the afternoon
Sam went to Bremerton to pay his
state tax. The shelves are in good
shape. Speed took his two hours off
this p.m. Not so busy in the store
this afternoon. A man was killed
today over at Dewatto passing one
of Usitello's trucks on a curve.
Tuesday, May 26, 1936
Everyone that could went to
Twanoh State Park to the school
picnic. Sam went to Seattle Mon-
day night and returned today about
5 to find out they were out of cork
for the cold box. Home fairly early.
Charlie pulled the raft out last
night so now it's all ready for swim-
ming.
Wednesday, May 27, 1936
A cool quiet night. Sam went to
Seattle at 5:30 a.m. and came back
at 9:30 with the cork for the cold
box. Sam down at the new build-
ing most of the day. Speed has his
day off today. Elizabeth got a new
spring outfit in Seattle yesterday.
She and Alice went to town and
nearly melted in the heat. Received
an invitation to a stork shower on
Doris Brown at Alice Giles.
Got a call from John Huson,
who will be 89 the end of June.
He grew up in Belfair and shared
some knowledge and stories. He
remembered when Rudy Redmond
was killed in 1936. Rudy was a
logger and had climbed a tree and
fell. John also told a story about
how Rudy and this other guy were
tougher than nails. They would
come to the store and have competi-
tions of who could pick up a sack of
sugar with their teeth. Great stuff
John and thanks for sharing. And
thank you for reading this week's
diary.
