Thursday, June 5, 2014 - Mason County Journal - Page A-11 Sheriff's Office acquires Army surplus vehicle Heavily armored combat vehicle could be used in hostage, search and rescue operations By NATALIE JOHNSON natalie@masoncounty, com In Iraq, mine-resistant ambush- protected vehicles such as the BAE Caiman protect soldiers from at- tacks while they navigate difficult terrain with their six-wheel drive design. In Mason County, such a vehicle can also come in handy. The Mason County Sheriffs Office acquired a Caiman last month at no cost to the office through a federal surplus program. "It'll be useful in a couple of ways," said Detective James Ward. Ward, an Army veteran, is one of a handful of Mason County Sheriffs deputies qualified to drive the impos- ing vehicle. "It's a combat vehicle -- it's de- signed to go into a combat theater," he said. "We don't have a mine prob- lem here." However, the heavily armored vehicle will be helpful in tactical events, such as a hostage situation, he said. The Caiman can also serve as a search and rescue vehicle because it can navigate off-road terrain in Ma- son County's wooded areas. The Sheriffs Office paid about $8,300 to ship the vehicle to Shel- ton. Much of that was funded by the state Department of Natural Resources because the two agencies Journal photo by Natalie Johnson The Mason County Sheriff's Office acquired this BAE Caiman mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle for free through a federal surplus program. The 53,500-pound vehicle normally sells for $733,000, Ward said. Each door weighs 600 pounds. Mechanics at Joint Base Lewis- McChord will handle all repairs the vehicle may need, he said. The passenger areas of the truck have been refurbished, but the engine and chassis are new, Ward said.
