Rainbow, Doily Varden, Silver, Cutthroat, Eastern Brook trout, perch, and other spiny ray fish are freshwater denizens awaiting the angler's bait. Lake Isabella is the only lake in the state where small mouth black bass may be taken, the game department reports. The inland waters yield chinook and silver salmon, sea-run cutthroat, and many varieties of bottom fish. Smelt run from August to October in Hood Canal east of Bald Point. At high tide on gravelly beaches they can be netted or scooped up. South shore near Twanoh State Park is one of the best spots. Limit is 20 pounds. Smelt waters are closed from 8 a.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Saturday. All this and several good steelhead streams offer a year-round challenge to fishermen of every inclination. The State Game Department's predictions of prospects in Mason County's most popular lakes are: BENSEN-should be good for rainbow 8-10 inches. CUSHMAN-cxccllcnt for cutthroat trout being raised in the new semi-natural rearing area at Standstill Lake, also for silver trout, Dolly Varden, and spinyrays. Fair for rainbow. DEVEREAUX-good for rainbow 8-10 inches. HAVEN-excellent for rainbow 9-10 inches. Also holds silvers and some large cutthroat. LOST-will be good for 8-9 inch rainbow and some silvers of same size. NAHWATZEL-should be good for 8-10 inch rainbow and cutthroat. Some larger cutthroat to 20 inches available. PHILLIPS-rehabilitated in 1968, should be very good for 7-8 inch rainbow. SPENCER-should be excellent for 8-9 inch trout with some larger holdovers available. TRAILS END-very good for 7-8 inch rainbow; rehabilitated in 1968. WOOTEN-good population of 8-9 inch rainbow, few larger; should be good. Other lakes, ponds, and beaver ponds regularly stocked by the game department are: Aldrich, Armstrong, Bath- tub, Bear, Blacksmith, Brown's Creek beaver ponds, Cady, Carson, Case Inlet beaver ponds, Clara, Cloquallum Creek beaver ponds, Deer, Dry Bed Lakes; Elk Lakes, Ellinor, Gibbon Creek beaver ponds, Grass, Hanks, Hatchery, Jefferson, Larson, Limerick," Little Is- land, Maggie, Mildred, Miller Marsh beaver ponds, Osborne, Panhandle, Price's, Robinson; Rose, Skookum Creek beaver ponds, Snow, Spider, Stetson, Steve's, Tee, Trask, Twin Lakes, "U" Lake, White Star beaver ponds, Wildberry, Winter Creek beaver ponds, and Wood Lake. Public fishing areas have been developed on these lakes: Aldrich, Benson, Cady, Clara, Devereaux, Haven (2) Isabella, Island, Lost, Maggie, Mason, Clear, Erie, Heart, McMurray, Sixteen, and Vogler. Hamma Hamma, Union, and Tahuya rivers are plant- ed with leg rainbows and searun cutthroat. Major winter steelhead fishing streams listed by the game department are the Skokomish, Dosewallips, Satsop, and Duckabush rivers. Another is the Wynooche, just over the border in eastern Grays Harbor County. The department reports the Skokomish offers nearly equal monthly success from December through April. The Wynooche is reported best in January. Steelhead punch cards are required for the summer season on Lake Cushman, Skokomish River including South Fork, Dosewallips, and Duckabush. High lake fishing awaits those who enjoy back-pack- ing, too, at the Mildred Lakes in the Haxnma Hamma Rec- reation Area of Olympic National Forest. At Flapjack and Smith Lakes out of Staircase campground in Olympic Na- tional Park Eastern Brook trout are taken. In recent years Jack Salmon have been appearing in increasing numbers, largely as a result of the rehabilitation of silver runs by the George N. Adams state hatchery. Sko- komish River is open for Jacks. Purdy Creek is closed. Lakes open April 18 to September 6 are: Devereaux, Haven, Lost, Phillips, Spencer, Tiger, Trails End, Wooten. Open year round are: Isabella, Island, and Mason Lakes. All other lakes are open April 18 to October 31. Rivers open May 23 to November 30 are: DeWatto, Skokomish, Tahuya, and Union.
