LAKE TRASK, a Mason County beauty spot, is being developed as a "campers country club," with private facilities for members, protected by a full time park ranger. Companies now involved in such planning are Simpson Timber Company, Weyerhaeuser Company, Boise-Cascade Development Co., and possibly Pope & Talbot. These substantial enterprises, among the timber industries largest and most progressive have noted and are getting ready for a new surge in the wave of part-time population which hit Mason County starting about 1961. This resulted in the explosive activity of developers which peaked in 1967 when plats were filed for 3605 building sites. At present there are more than 77 active developments in the county providing an estimated 40,000 lots for vacation homes. Building on these sites has now reached the point where the number of seasonal dwellings in the county actually surpasses the number of homes occupied the year round. County Planning Director James Connolly reports that there are now 4,183 permanent dwellings, plus building permits for 86 more issued during the past year, to indicate a potential occupancy of 4,269. Seasonal dwellings total 4,142, plus building permits for 210 more. This brings the vacation homes in being or planned to 4,352 or 83 units more than the permanent occupancy category. The county planning commission is in no doubt about the continuance of this part-time population pressure. The planners have before them an estimate from professional consultants that by 1990 Mason County's seasonal population will hit 54,840. With such portents, the big timber companies have activated their own planning machinery in anticipation of moving in when the time is ripe. Simpson Timber Company is engaged in a land development study under direction of an assistant to the president in the company's Seattle headquarters. Simpson owns 165,000 acres in Mason County, including several properties suitable for home site development. These include large areas around Lake Nahwatzel and some 30,000 acres on Hood Canal. Pope & Talbot owns about 1,000 acres on Harstine Island in a tree farm which has development possibilities now that the new bridge has made the island accessible. A company spokesman said nothing is planned at present. But is was pointed out that Pope & Talbot has been a real estate developer since 1900 and that it has previously undertaken development of its Mason County holdings at Benson Lake, Mason Lake, and participated in Treasure Island. Besides its land on Harstine Island, Pope & Talbot owns large areas on the mainland north of the island up to Mason Lake and on the Tahuya Peninsula. Boise-Cascade Properties, which has acquired the Nettleton Lumber Company lands on the Tahuya Peninsula plans a large development in the highlands area overlooking Hood Canal from Anderson Cove south to Dewatto. About one-third of this is in Mason County. A master plan proposal on this has already been submitted to the Kitsap County planning commission Mary M. Knight School near Matlock is a unique in- stitution for several interesting reasons. The school district covers 190 square miles in the sparsely populated hinterland west of Shelton. Yet with- out state aid its taxpayers have built a modern 12-grade school costing $185,000. Mary M. Knight has a drop-out rate of less than two percent. A high percentage of its graduates go to college. The school has five elementary classrooms, adminis- trative offices, a science room equipped for chemistry, physics, and biology, a sound-proofed commercial room, one classroom exclusively for English, and one for social studies, math and history. A large library with 3,500 books is available after school hours for community gatherings. Housed in other buildings are gymnasium, shop classrooms, and a covered playshed. The four-year high school curriculum is fully accredit- ed. Graduates can continue their education where they choose. All state-required subjects are covered. English is taught for four years, exceeding state standards.
