~e Port of Shelton pla~ a vital ~le in development of diversified indus~iaJ expansion for Mason County and in the construction and maintenance of recreation facili- ties for public use. The largest and most active component in a many- sided program administered by the Port Commission is the activity under way at Sanderson Airport, comprising 1083.2 acres fronting on Highway 101 north of Shelton. The port district also owns several other properties in and near Shelton whose tenants provide the Port with substantial income and residents of the district, which covers 105 square miles, with an increasing number of jobs. In the Shelton dock area on Oakland Bay, 75 pleasure boats, several commercial fish boats, and a growing num- ber of visiting boaters use well-maintained mooring faciii- ties. Cleared area at top right is, new recreation complex site. At John's Prairie an industrial park is being developed on 407 acres. Three tenants are manufacturing wood products. A fourth, Bonneville Power Administration, has leased 60 acres for stockpiling construction materials. At Arcadia Point a public boat launching ramp is provided. The Port District also owns 1,696 feet of waterfront at Eagle Point on Hammersley Inlet where plans call for future development of a 16-acre picnic site. A really amazing variety of activities is carried on at Sanderson Airport. The biggest operator is Certified Manu- facturing Company which moved there from Seattle in 1967. This sub-contractor for Boeing, Lockheed, Battelle, and other Pacific Northwest manufacturers is producing parts for aircraft, ships, and missiles. Shelton Sclaool District uses five buildings, occupied by the Rogers School for Mentally Retarded, the school garage, bus parking, carpentry shop, and auto mechanics shop. The State Department of Natural Resources bases its Shelton district staff in two buildings. Fire fighting equip- merit kept there can be used for airport fire protectioon.
