BRUIN is now a game animal, legitimate prey until October 30 in Mason County for licensed hunters. Page S-54 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, June 17, 1971 Public and private land~ open to hun~ in Mason County cover 377,620 acres,:well populat~ with black- tailed deer, roosevelt elk, and black bear. Grouse, pheasant and quail are found in the" uplands. Waterfowl include migrating ducks, geese, doves, and pigeons. Timberlands are open to hunters without restrictions except in extreme fire weather. Caution is advised in active logging areas, particularly on forest roads used by log trucks. The open lands include 160,000 acres owned by Simp- son Timber Company and 111,108 in the Shelton District of Olympic National Forest which comprise the Coopera- tive Sustained Yield Unit. Also open are 46,000 acres in the Hoodsport District of Olympic National Forest. State lands are also unrestricted except for fire pro- tection and where these are leased for grazing and agri- culture which may be posted against hunting. Most popular hunting areas in Mason County, accord- ing to "Northwest Fishing & Hunting Guide" are: DEER: Mason Lake, south of Lake Nahwatzel, Lake Cushman, Camp 3, Camp 5, Tahuya, and Hamma Hamma districts, Pickering Passage, and Harstine Island. ELK: Fairly plentiful in South Fork of Skokomish River district. BEAR: Mason Lake, Matlock, Lake Cushman, Lake Nahwatzel, Dewatto, and Hamma Hamma districts. CHINESE PHEASANTS: Shelton Valley, Skokomish Valley, Kamilche Valley, and a few in Matlock district. BLUE GROUSE: Lake Cushman, northwest of Lake Nahwatzel, Matlock, and Hamma Hamma River districts. According to the state game department, deer pro- duce well around Grapeview, a brushy area requiring heavy pressure, and the upper Skokomish River back of Camp Govey where the bushy draws should be hunted. For elk the upper Skokomish and LiMwaup areas are the best producers. Bear, which may be hunted the year round ,frequent cascara patches in logged off areas. Ruffed grouse may be found along grassy trails and in alder thickets in the Tahuya and Dewatto River areas. Hunting black bear which changed from predator to game animal status last year now requires a hunting license and a bear tag. Game seasons for 1971 set by the Washington State Game Commission are as follows: General buck: in non-elk areas from October 16 to November 14; in elk areas from October 16 to October 30, then reopen Nov. 10-14. High mountain buck: September 11 through 26. General bull elk: November 1 through 14. Black bear: through October 30. Cougar: year-round. Grouse: September 11 through November 14.
