Thursday, July 3, 2014 - Mason County Journal - Page B-3 Highclimber Hoop Camp: 'How you grow a program' By EMILY HANSON emi@masoncoun com Aaron Leth likes what he sees with the Highclimber Hoop Camp. The numbers are growing: Last year, five girls and 13 boys attended the two- day camp. Last week, Leth had 35 boys and girls in grades second through sev- enth in the Mini Dome. "This is how you grow a program," Leth said. During the two-day camp, June 26 and 27, Leth, volunteer coaches and high school helpers taught the partici- pants ball-handling, shooting, passing and defensive skills. The children participated in drills that combined the four skills and were also split into teams to scrimmage. "Hopefully, this camp gets them excited to play basketball and it gets them active," Leth said. "It also gives us a chance to see how well they're improving and learning, because some kids come to the camp every year." He said a benefit of the camp is that all of the skills taught to the partici- pants are skills they can work on at home. "You don't need a hoop for these ex- ercises," Leth said. As the head girls basketball coach at Shelton High School, Leth's goal for the camp is for it to grow enough that one camp for only girls has 40 partici- pants.
