Western Washington University
honored outstanding graduates for
the 2013-2014 academic year at spring
Commencement on June 14.
Faculty members
from dozens of aca-
demic departments
and programs select
one graduate to hon-
or as the Outstand-
ing Graduate of the
year. Selection is
based on grades, re-
search and writing,
Jared Ibarra service to the cam-
del Bosque pus and community,
and promise for the
future.
This year's select graduates includ-
ed Jared Ibarra del Bosque, Outstand-
ing Graduate for the Human Services
and Rehabilitation Department, who
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hu-
man Services.
Throughout his course of study, he
has sought opportunities to encour-
age, mentor, educate and support stu-
dents of underrepresented groups to
attend and stay in college. He served
as an ALTO mentor at Shuksan Mid-
dle School in Bellingham, volunteered
at Western's "Migrant Youth Leader-
ship Conference, served as a senior
assistant in Western's LeaderCorps
peer educators, and interned in the
Continuing and College Education pro-
gram where he worked on recruitment
efforts.
He also did an independent study
for the Human Service program seek-
ing to both recruit and retain under-
represented students to the program.
After graduation, he hopes to be-
come an admissions counselor to con-
tinue his work recruiting and assisting
underrepresented minority students to
pursue higher education. A graduate of
Shelton High School, Ibarra is the son
of Martha and Jose Luis Ibarra.

celebrate his 80th birth-
day with an open house
for family and friends.
The celebration will
take place from 9:30 a.m.
to 11 a.m. July 20 in Fel-
lowship Hall at Faith

Erna Brucker
Erna M. (Wittenberg)
Brucker, 93, died July 4,
2014, at Maple Glen Se-
nior Living in Shelton.
She was born March
3, 1921, to Abraham and
Katherine Wittenberg.
Erna married George
Brucker on Dec. 18,
1944, in Bismarck,
North Dakota.
She worked as a book-
keeper at Simpson Lum-
ber in Shelton, and the
Quadrant Corporation in
Seattle.
She was a member
of St. Edward Catholic
Church in Shelton.
Erna is survived by
sisters Katherine Oster
of California, Minnie
Webb of Bellevue and
Ruby Graham of Bel-
levue; sister-in-law
Dorothy Vonhof of Shel-
ton; sons Robert Brucker
of Grapeview and James
Brucker; grandchildren
Melissa, Matthew, Mi-
chael and Mary Beth;
and numerous nieces
and nephews.
A funeral will be at 1
p.m. Aug. 2, at St. Ed-
ward Catholic Church
in Shelton. Erna will be
buried at Shelton Memo-
rial Park.
