No, Rayonier scientists are not turning the area near their laboratory into a campground. The air-inflatable structure covers a young Golden Delicious apple tree - the subject of a controlled-climate agricultural experiment. The basic job of the laboratory is to perfect wood pulping processes on a very small scale, but designed for plant operation. These materials, called silvichemicals, are used in such diverse industries as water treatment, construction, agriculture, and petroleum. Rayonier also markets a line of silvichemicals designed to make soil nutrients, such as iron, available to growing things. Such fertilizers have already proved effective in apple orchards particularly in eastern Washington where iron deficiency in the soil may be a problem. Why the apple tree and the balloon? In an effort to further test and perfect these products, Rayonier scientists needed to simulate a late spring cold spell. What would happen if u nseasonably cold weather occurred after the nutrient had been applied? Would this trigger "russeting," a rough skin condition of the fruit? To simulate such a cold spell, the plastic air-filled bag is placed over the tree and a heavy-duty refrigeration unit inside keeps the temperature just above the freezing point. Prior to this cold spell a different fertilizer was sprayed on six branches of the tree. A fterwards the fruit is allowed to mature normally and any signs of russeting are duly noted by the scientists. The air-filled structure is located near a small building on the laboratory grounds which contains a controlled environment chamber where other experiments on plants are conducted including the application of trace elements needed for healthy plant growth. ITT Rayonier is a forest products manufacturer and producer of cellulose, a highly purified wood fiber used by the chemical and fiber industries to p~oduce a variety of pxoducts from acetate to plastics and rayon. The company maintains its headquarters in New York City and has approximately 6300 employees in its manufacturing, research and forest operations located in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada.
