Betty Brown
Betty (B.J.) Jean
Brown (Meeks), 69, died
July 24, 2014. She was
a resident of Shelton for
more than 12 years.
She was born July
23, 1945, to Vernon and
Reta (Sallee) Meeks
in Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
She worked at the
Jamestown S'Klallam
Tribe in Sequim from
1990 to 1992 and as a
Squaxin Island Tribal
Council secretary from
1992-1998. She then
moved to Kona, Hawaii,
where she worked for
a law firm. She worked
with Amadeo Tian as
administrative assis-
tant in 2007, and then
moved to community
services as program as-
sistant under Carmen
Kalama.
She loved being a
mother and grandmoth-
er. She loved all things
Native American and
her time spent in Ha-
waii. She loved to write,
and enjoyed her vaca-
tions with her grandchil-
dren at Lake Cushman.
She also loved her cat,
Bella.
She is survived by
daughters Tracy (Ray)
Bartroff of Shelton
and Jennifer Brown of
Vancouver; son Rob-
ert Brown of Olympia;
grandchildren Joshua
Duchene of Portland,
Oregon, Chelsea Duch-
ene of Shelton, Jessica
Cornwell of Watertown,
New York, and Jacob
Brown of Olympia;
numerous nieces and
nephews in Washington,
Texas and California;
sister-in-law Clairee
Meeks of Sequim and
lifetime friend Nita Mat-
tingly of Shelton.
She was preceded in
death by her parents,
Vernon and Reta (Sal-
lee) Meeks; brothers
Tom Meeks, Bob Meeks
and John Meeks; sister
Nita Branson; and neph-
ew Michael Branson.
A celebration of life
will be from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. Sept. 7 at the
Squaxin Community
Kitchen, 3591 SE Old
Olympic Highway. Last

Cynthia Ann Dorland,
29, a lifelong resident of
Shelton, died Aug. 11,

She was born Nov.
3, 1984, to Robert and
Donna (Lopeman) Baker

Cynthia enjoyed
spending time with fam-
ily and friends, basket
weaving, beading, color-
ing, and loved her dog,
Puppy.

Valerie Jean (Rains)
VanCleve, 55, died Aug.
7, 2014, in Sweet Grass
County, Montana, when
the motorcycle she and
her husband, Allen,
were riding hit a deer.
Valerie was born Feb.
28, 1959, in Olympia to
Franklin V. and Marie

was a lifelong resident of
Shelton.
She attended South-
side Elementary School
and graduated from
Shelton High School in
1977. She then attended
Saint Martin's College in
Lacey.
Valerie married Allen
E. VanCleve on June 23,
1990, in Shelton.
She worked at
MACECOM for 25 years,
recently as a shift su-
pervisor and training
coordinator. She played
a role in establishing
MACECOM 911's Re-
serve Dispatch Program,
which was the first in
Washington.
Valerie was a member
of the Mason County
Chapter of ABATE, an
organization of motorcy-
cle enthusiasts dedicat-
ed to the freedom of the
road. She was a member
of the Washington Chap-
ter of Associated Public
Safety Communications
Officers (APCO).
Valerie was a sup-
porter of organ donation.
She was happy with
her position as a 911
dispatcher helping with
emergencies.
She was active in
school and community
activities such as county
and state 4-H programs,
and was a Master Gar-
dener. She loved quilt-
ing, knitting, all types of
music, dancing, camping
with family and friends,
and fireworks during the
Fourth of July.
Valerie is survived by
husband Allen E.
