Saturday's event includes food, beer, music and a bar- becue competition. Patrons can dance in the street to live music. They can also hang out in Hale's Ales English double- decker party bus and enjoy a beer in Smoking Mo's outdoor beer garden. Funds go to the Mason County HOST (Housing Op- tions for Students in Tran- sition) program, which sup- ports homeless students by providing temporary housing, monthly stipends, case man- agement and job-shadow op- portunities. Students live with HOST families or in transitional housing. Participants are mentored by a program coordinator who works from his office at CHOICE Alternative School. The HOST program is funded by the Skookum Ro- tary Club, the Gates Foun- dation and Mason County Homeless Prevention Funds, in collaboration with and the Shelton School District. Contestants will check in at 7 p.m., The judging is slated ~o ~alce place a~ ~:~0 p.m. and the awards at 5 p.m. Beben and Carvajal-Beben own Smoking Mo's. Carvajal-Beben grew up inside her mother's and grandmother's bakery and restaurant in McAlester, Oklahoma, tasting the pies and serving the patrons. In South Carolina, Beben and his cousins would spend all night Christmas Eve sit- ting alongside his Uncle Charlie's outdoor pit moni- toring a barbecuing process called "pig pickin'." As a married couple, Be- ben and Carvajal-Beben combined their culinary talents to make Smoking Mo's Kitchen an instant hit on Shelton's First Street from 2007 to 2010, before they took their name and Southern barbecue reci- pes to the Alderbrook Golf Course. In November 2012, Smok- ing Mo's Kitchen made its official return to downtown. The restaurant is located in a brick building constructed in 1915, which originally housed the First Bank of Shelton. The couple's business part- ner is Drew McEwen, who is the state legislator represent- ing District 35.
