Each year, cancer survivors decline
to participate in the Shelton Relay
for Life because they can't bring their
dogs, said Vicki Gonzales, one of the
organizers of the event.
Relay for Life of Shelton is kicking
off its 2015 season by hosting an event
designed to include the canine compan-
ions of cancer survivors.
The Bark for Life of Shelton is sched-
uled for 10 a.m. Sept. 6. Registration
begins at 9 a.m. at Loop Field, and the
event includes a walk through Shelton.
Participation costs $20 per dog (owners
get in free) and includes purple bandan-
as for all dogs. Pm~ple is the color of Re-
lay for Life's logo.
"We've always wanted to have peo-
ple bring their dogs," Gonzales said.
Dogs are not allowed at most Relay
for Life locations, which are often high
school tracks, she said.
This is Shelton's first Bark for Life,
but the Relay-sponsored event has taken
place in other cities for years, said Tracy
Brady, community relationship manager
with the American Cancer Society
"It's really to honor our canine care-
givers ... to honor the individuals that
have lost pets to cancer and also the
dogs that bring happiness to cancer
