FLY ON THE SIDELINE With the start of the football season, its once again time for the Red and Black Scrim- mage at Highclimber Sta- dium. I look forward to this scrimmage every year. It's a fun time to get a glimpse of the talent on the By EMILY Shelton football team and to HANSON see the young football players suited up and looking proud. The stands are usually packed with fans, and the air smells of hamburgers and hot dogs cooking on the grill. This year's scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. Holding the scrim- mage on Labor Day weekend could lower attendance. So here are a few facts to help en- tice you to show up and support the Shelton football teams. The event is organized every year by the Shelton High School Touchdown Club, the football program's booster club. And the booster club does more than just show up to sup- port the Highclimbers. Through fundraiser events such as the scrimmage, the Touchdown Club raises money to make meals for players and coaches at the summer team- building camp, provide sack lunches for all players for away games, and purchase needed equipment and supplies not funded by the Shelton School District. The scrimmage is a low-key football event. The Shelton varsity, junior varsity and C-team squads square off on one half of the field for short scoring at- tempts. On the other half, the youth football teams -- formerly known as the Kings, but now also called the Climbers -- play short games against each. In total, the football programs have almost 300 athletes suited up.
