Page A-22 - Mason County Journal - Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 Funeral Alternatives means on FuneralS, Caske~i and Cremation Daniel Lee Olson Daniel Lee Olson lived life with great gusto, and passed at home, surrounded by family, on September 9, 2014. He was 68. Dan was a long time resident of Shelton. He was born in Brainerd, Minnesota, and his parents, Vernon M. Olson and Delores J. Schultes, moved their family to Shelton in 1950. Dan met the love of his life, Gail Downing, at Shelton Junior High in 1960, and he graduated from Irene S. Reed in the Class of '64. Dan and Gail married in 1966, and she followed him during his time in the Navy, when he was a seaman on the USS Quillback submarine. They moved to Seattle in 1970, and Dan graduated from the University of Washington in 1973. Their daughter Jennifer and son Gabe were born, and they all moved to Shelton in 1979. Dan sold real estate for several years, but decided that teaching was his passion, and entered the classroom in 1987. He taught at Shelton Middle School and Evergreen Elementary, where he could often be seen in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, until his retirement in 2007. After their retirement, Dan and Gail spent half of each year enjoying the sunshine, colorful culture, and vibrant expat community of their home away from home, Mazatlan, Mexico. Dan claimed to have seen the famous green flash, but that remains unconfirmed. Dan loved people and was passionate about his family, his students, his friends and his community. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, parent, uncle, and grandfather, and spent much of his time involved in family activities, from road trip vacations to sporting events. Dan brought intelligence, caring, and humor to his classroom, hoping to help "his kids" become the best people they could be. His sense of wonder and curiosity at the world around him inspired his students. Dan was committed to his community and friends. He was a volunteer firefighter with Shelton District 4, longtime member of Christmastown Kiwanis, and a Mazatlan Tourist Aide Volunteer. He coached soccer for Shelton Youth Soccer League, girls' soccer at Shelton High School, and track at Shelton Middle School. A lover of the outdoors, Dan enjoyed hiking, camping, bicycling, soccer, golf, stargazing, Tai Chi, and spending time at the beach. Dan and Gail also got out into the world and explored as many places as they could, meeting people and having many adventures along the way. Dan loved spending time with his friends, singing karaoke, reminiscing about notorious exploits, and arguing politics. He made a perfect margarita. Dan lived his life with great enthusiasm, touched many people's lives and is already missed by many. Dan is survived by his mother Delores Olson, his wife Gail Olson, his son Gabriel Olson, and his granddaughter Alexis Phillips Olson, of Shelton; his daughter Jennifer McCoy and her husband Bruce McCoy, of Dubai; his sister Kathy Olson and her partner Colleen Melick, of Hoodsport; his brother Jim Olson and his wife Sue Eike, of Buckeye, AZ; his brother- and sister-in-law Dale and Carolyn Downing, of Surprise, AZ; his sister- and brother-in-law Kathy and Tom Myer, of Tacoma; his niece Amy Lindsay, husband Scott Lindsay, and their children, of Surprise, AZ; his nephew Rob Downing, wife Michele, and their children, of Phoenix, AZ; his nephew Tom Downing, of Phoenix, AZ; his nephew Andrew Ng, and his nephew Jeffry Ng, wife Melissa and their children, of Tacoma; and Kenneth Ensley, his stepfather-in-law, of Tumwater.
