Page A-8 - Mason County Journal - Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 Commission approves 2015 budget By NATALIE JOHNSON natalie@masoncounty com Port of Shelton residents should pay slightly lower taxes in 2015. The Port commission unani- mously approved its 2015 bud- get Tuesday, which includes a $600,000 surplus, and ap- proved a resolution to slightly decrease its tax levy for 2015. "We want this Port to be self-sufficient so we can elimi- nate all levies," said Commie- sioner Tom Wallitner. In 2014, the Port is expecting to receive a total of $704,075 in property-tax revenue. According to state law, the Port commission can increase its tax rate by 1 percent an- nually. If the commission had voted to take the 1 percent increase in 2015, its revenue would have been $714,676. The Port commission voted to not take the 1 percent in- crease and also voted to de- crease its tax revenue for 2015 to $700,000, about $4:000 less than the previous year. "This is huge," Wallitner said. The Port received no public comment on the budget. Port operating revenues, which include income from Sanderson Field, the Oakland Bay Marina and other Port properties, are projected to amount to $1.83 million. Expenses on those prop- erties, in addition to general and administrative expenses at the Port, are projected to be $1.78 million, leaving a surplus in operating funds of $51,634. Non-operating revenue, which includes primarily prop- erty-tax money, amounts to $720,000, while non-operating expenses total $118,315. The Port also expects to re- ceive $150,000 in grants in 2015 and expects to make more than $200,000 in debt payments. Overall, the Port antici- pates a budget surplus of $590,760 in 2015. The Port also has about $3.3 million in cash and in- vestments. "We have a substantial re- serve, and we're moving for- ward," Commissioner Dick Taylor said Tuesday. The Port also approved its 2015 capital budget, which in- cludes $3.5 million in projects, $350,000 of which will be fund- ed by the Port. The Port's largest upcoming project is the construction of a 22,000-square-foot, $2.75 mil- lion building budgeted to be paid for with loans, grants and port funding. The budget also includes projects to repair portions of the runway at Sanderson Field Airport, the purchase and in- stallation of security cameras at Oakland Bay Marina and the Johns Prairie Industrial site, and building upgrades at Sanderson Field.
