Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 -Mason County Journal- Page A-9 Performances begin Oct. 19 in She~ton By NATALIE JOHNSON natalie@masoncounty, com Since 1949, Mason County has hosted Chinese acrobats, Russian folk dancers, classical pianists, comedi- ans, choirs and harmonica masters, thanks to the Mason County Concert Association (MCCA). This year, the association will cele- brate its 65th anniversary with a new set of performances. "It used to be all classical. In the last five years, it's changed to a broader mix," association President Becky Shuyten said. "The variety is amazing ... we're very lucky to have it here." Despite that variety, Shuyten said membership in the organization is down. The MCCA is a nonprofit organiza- tion that works with Live on Stage, a national booking organization, to bring performers to Shelton. Each year, the association brings between four and six acts to the area. "We're down a little, but we're very healthy," Shuyten said. "It's kind of hard to get new members." Acts cost the organization, which has an annual budget of about $33,000, between $5,000 and $14,000 each, Shuyten said. "We're scheduling next year be- fore this year's concert season even starts," she said. Highlights in the past few years include the Shangri-La Chinese Ac- robats in October 2011, the Canadian Photo courtesy of Umigarrett.com Teenage pianist Umi Garrett will perform at 7 p.m. May 13 at the Performing Arts Center at Shelton High School as part of the Mason County Concert Association's 2014-2015 concert series. All concerts will take place at the Performing Arts Center at Shelton High School. The Mason County Concert As- sociation has a reciprocal agreement with other local communities, such as Bremerton and Chehalis, allowing season-ticket holders to attend con- certs in other communities. For more information on the perfor- mances, call 426-1842 or go to mccca. com. Brochures are available at the Shelton Timberland Library and the Shelton Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Shuyten said the organization struggles to inform the community about its concerts. "I think more people don't go be- cause they don't know about it," she said. "People are home on their com- puters. They work all day and want to go home and watch TV or some- thing." 2014 Jeep Patriot FWD 2015 Chrysler 200 2014 Ford Fiesta SE 4 cyl, auto, CD, sharp 4 cyl, auto, power equip group, more 4 cyl.
