ATHLETE.00 THE WEEK
Tennis still thrills Shelton senior
By EMILY HANSON

Jusiin Demattos still re-
members nearly every detail of
his first victory for the Shelton
boys tennis team.
The SHS senior remembers
that the match was in Yelm his
freshman year. He remembers
that he played doubles. And he
remembers what it felt like.
"It was scary, but great," De-
mattos, 17, said. "It was a great
way to get that first win out of
the way."
Four years later, winning
matches is still exciting for De-
mattos.
"It feels good, always," De-
mattos said. "When it gets close,
it gets scary."
Demattos began playing ten-
nis in seventh grade through
the youth tennis camp SHS
head coach John Perry hosts ev-
ery summer.
"I thought it might be fun,"
Demattos said with a shrug.
Is tennis still fun?
"Oh, yeah," he replied as a
grin lit up his face.
"i love the play style. It's
calm and quiet," he said. "It can
be a team sport, a single sport.
It can be anything you want it
to be, really."
After competing at the 3A
West Central District III cham-
pionship last fall, Demattos'
goal this year is to reach the
3A WIAA State Boys Tennis
Championship, which will be
played in the spring.
"i think we have a good
chance at districts," he said.
Although Demattos started
this season as a doubles player,
he switched to playing singles
when his partner, senior Andrew
Johnson, injured his collarbone.
"I like playing singles right
now," Demattos said.
He stated he'd like to play
tennis in college at the Division
IH level.
"rm looking at Whitman Col-
lege (in Walla Walla). rd love to
go there," Demattos said. "They
have the programs I want to
study and a good tennis team."
Although he hasn't decided
what he wants to major in, De-
mattes said his interests include
astronomy, politics, physics and
business.
Academically, Demattos
should be well prepared for what-
ever subject he chooses to pursue.
He has a 3.97 GPA and is
ranked third in his class.
Outside of regular classes,
Demattos is the treasurer of the
Key Club and a National Honor
Society member.
"I try, to do all the volunteer
stuff for Key Club," he said. "It's
the high school version of Ki-
wanis and I plan to join Circle K,
the college version, next year."
He said he enjoys Key Club
because of the people and the
volunteer work.
"It's a great way to help the
community and the fundraisers
are a lot of fun," Demattos said.

both great coaches. G-man (SHS assistant tennis coach
Dann Gagnon) is a great coach, too."
Would you walk around in a tutu like teammate Danny
Dracobly? "It depends on what it's for. If it's for spirit week,
yes. If it's just random, I don't know."

away from school, tennis and
volunteer work, Demattos said
he enjoys playing video games.
Which is his favorite video
game?
"Don't even get me started
on the subject," he replied while
laughing.
