Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 - Mason County Journal - Page B-3 FLY ON THE SIDELINE Near the end of the third quarter Dec. 3, as the Shelton boys basketball 'team fought back in its home game against Hoquiam, senior Tyler Speaks grabbed a rebound. Just after Speaks put the ball up to score a layup for the High- climbers, the referee called him for traveling, negating his points. The Shelton fans erupted into boos and yelled out their displea- sure with the call. That's the loudest I've heard the crowd at an SHS boys basket- ball game in two years. Then, with 8 seconds left in the game, and Shelton leading 55-53, the crowd rose to its feet to taunt Hoquiam and try to stop the Griz- zlies from scoring. It didn't work. Tied at 55 points at the buzzer, the Highclimbers went on to lose 70-64 after one overtime period. see SIDELINE, page B-4 By EMILY HANSON SPORTS BRIEFS NMHS bowlers win a baker game against Klahowya With a baker game victory, the North Mason girls bowling team scored one match point against Klahowya. Haven Hermsen's two-game total was 237. Melanie Hall hit 115 in one game. Lady Climbers record season best bowling score The Shelten girls bowling team hit a season high last week. During the Lady Highclimbers' 7-0 loss at Mount Tahoma, the team bowled 589 in the second game for the season record. The first game score was 494. "Considering our first game at the beginning of the season was 443, it is nice to see the girls improv- ing," head coach Dann Gagnon said. "We're working on the fundamentals at each practice and games as the key to improvement." He said he's confident the team can bowl a 600 game or above by the end of the season. Adreanna Cheney led the girls with a two-game total of 258, while Rebecca Robinson scored 229 and Emily Frost hit 215. The girls also lost 4-3 to Capital on Dec. 2. "We lost the first game by six pins, but won the second game by 97 pins," Gagnon said. "I'm trying to change their mindset to believe in themselves and continue to work hard, but have fun at the same time." Cheney bowled 323 in two games, while Robinson added 241 and Abby Ellyson contributed 209. Quilcene defeats Mary M. Knight boys basketball The Mary M. Knight boys basketball fell in its first game of the season. Quilcene defeated the Knight Owls 52-29 Satur- day in Quilcene. "We played hard, we are just very inexperienced and will continue to work," head coach Joclin Jul- mist said. "James Anderson and Jason Shaw played well all game and it was nice seeing the young guys work hard when it was most of their first time play- ing a high school basketball game." Senior Austin Renecker led the team with 12 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Anderson, a se- nior, scored eight points and had five rebounds, one assist, five blocks and two steals.
