Page 20 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, December 16, 1999 CLIMBER HEAD COACH Rob Phelan holds forth on the athletes' behalf at the start of the diving portion of Tuesday night's nonleague clash. ExClimber Ena goes lo-o-o-ong The one that got away went all the way this month, and Climber football coaches are still shaking their heads over it. '¢Yeah, we knew he was gonna be that good," says Climber assis- tant coach Bill Hicks, referring to the same Tall Ena who passed for four touchdowns a week ago Fri- day to lead the Prosser Mustangs over Sammamish 42-38 and to their third state 3-A champion- ship of the decade. After all, says Hicks, it was the Climber coaching staff that had been grooming the 6-3 Samoan for fully two seasons - until he transferred out at the end of last school year upon the career move of his dad, SHS vice principal Pat Ena. And what did our exClimber do by way of his senior-year King- dome swan song? Check it out: He completed 20 of 32 passes for 294 yards with one intercep- tion. He threw four touchdowns- including the game-winner from 12 yards out with just 17 seconds remaining. Ena, who has been scouted by a number of Division One schools including Washington State, so° threw TD passes of 48, 27 ana yards. The Mustangs finished the sea- son with a 12-2 record and their third state title of the Nineti.es The Climbers, forced to go wlu an untested sophomore of con- spicuous talent but whom coaches openly planned to bring along slowly, struggled to a 4-5 record and bowed out of the playOff chase long before the end. ..k Incidentally, Tall (rhymes wau/ golly) is a sibling of another ex- Climber of note, now-BYU starv ing linebacker Justin Ena.
