Will building permit fees in- ment director, add up and suggested a "cost re- available here in Shelton, at Mountain

the proposal before the Mason
County Commission. A/er a pub-
lic hearing the board voted to table
the proposal for a few weeks in or-
der to allow for more discussion of'
the issue.
The proposal is to raise fees 10
percent in 2007 and then 3 percent
in subsequent years. This would
help keep revenues consistent
with costs in the Maon County
Department of Comnmnity Devel-
opment, as staff salaries increase
each year to allow for the rising
cost of living.
"We're trying to cover our costs

costs of increasing salaries and
programs," said Barbara Robin-
son, deputy community develop-
Brandon Houskeeper, govern-
ment afthirs director of the Olym-
pia Master Builders, spoke at the.
public hearing in opposition to the
fee increases. In past years, he
said, the master builders had sup-
ported increases when the work
load indicated a need for those in-
creases. However, he said in this
case very little timely notification
was published.
HOUSKEEPER said the mas-
ter builders received notice the
afternoon before the hearing and
would have appreciated earlier
notification. He also questioned
the county's value assessment
process, as compared to that of
Thurston County, which is more
complex. He also said some of the
numbers in the proposal didn't
