Girls win, boys lose Hoop Climbers' paths diverge The girls of Climber basketball celebrated their long-awaited re- turn to the Minidome Saturday with a 64-31 win over visiting Franklin Pierce. Taking their nonleague visitors out of the game early with a full- court trapping press that yield- ed turnover after turnover, the Climbers had a double-digit lead by early in the second quarter and never looked back. They improved to 3-0 after earlier missing the better part of two weeks prior to Christmas when one cancellation led to another. Shelton's boys, meanwhile, lost for just the second time in seven outings when nonleague host Cen- tralia's Tigers tripped them up 64- 57 a week ago Wednesday. The Climbers went to the free- throw line just six times, their hosts fully 28. Senior veteran Corey Golob had 20 points and three assists to lead the way in defeat. All-league class- mate Curtis Trondsen tossed in 17 points and fellow senior veteran Derek Ranney led on the boards with nine rebounds. A 5-16 second quarter proved the Climber boys' undoing. Citing business-ed goals that were not being met at the Pac- 10 school that wooed them with matching full-ride scholarships in '04, now-junior siblings Andy and Alex broke with the Golden Bears following a disappointing cross- country season this past fall and just prior the Christmas break ac- cepted internationally renowned Razorback coach John McDonnell's invitation to walk on at fabled U of Arkansas. Although it has not been formal- ized, says their morn - one-time Razorback sprinter and cheer- leader Judy McClary - scholar- ships there at the Arkansas school are expected to be forthcoming for both Climber grads. SATURDAY, TWO DAYS be- fore their scheduled flight to Fay- etteville, the twins were halfway forthright on their move. That is to say, The Journal succeeded in contacting one but not both twins. Both twins shattered all-time frosh point-scoring records for the Gold- en Bears their first spring, and prep All-American Alex even made it to the NCAA Division I national championships in the 800 meters that year while his brother made the provisional list in the mile and just barely missed making the trip. But this fall, after a sophomore year marked more by the struggle to up their mileage for the de- mands of cross-country than im- provement of PRs, the twins fell on hard times.
