SADD
students work to prevent textin
On Monday, Dec. 21 ap-
proximately 20 students from
Shelton High School and
Oakland Bay Junior High
Students Against Destruc-
tive Decisions (SADD) clubs
had a one-hour rally after
school at the intersection of
Wallace Kneeland Blvd. and
Olympic Highway North.
The club members held
up signs to get the message
across that it is not a good
idea to text and drive or talk
on your cell phone while driv-
ing.
One of the signs said
"Honk your horn if you don't
text and drive." Another said.
"Please hang up your phone,
your friends can wait."
Many passing drivers
honked their horn, however,

The SADD club received
a $4,500 grant from State
Farm Insurance and the
National Youth Leadership
Council (NYLC) to promote
teaching people to not text
and drive in schools and com-
munities in Mason County
and throughout the state.
Some projects already
done by the SADD clubs in-
clude: a nine minute video on
the adverse affects oftexting
and driving, placards on the
back of five Mason Trans-
portation Autority (MTA)
busses, two 30 second pub-
lic service announcements
aired twice daily in Novem-
ber and December and a pro-
motional activity at a boys
basketball game at Shelton
High School.

"They're usually done in
country clubs or bars," she
said.
Adding to the old-time
feel, local music group
Swing Fever provided the
entertainment this year,
and packed themselves
into the Harstine Island
Community Hall's small
stage. Swing dancing is
very much encouraged at
the party, and tends to be
popular with all ages.
"The music kind of
crosses generations," Rose
Benz said.
The community club
planned for a packed house
this year.
"It's crowded," Jan Ir-
ving said. "We've sold a
lot of tickets this year. We
usually end up with about
120 people."
People come from all
parts of the island, some
dressed up and some
dressed down, but all
ready to have a good time
dancing the night away
into the new year.
"It's a great way for
people to meet too," Rose
Benz said. "People who
don't know each other end
up at the same table and
by the end they're making
plans to sit together next

Maize wishes for the New Year to find a spe-
cial family that will share the love and affection
this little lady needs and deserves. She has had a
rough start and is ready and in need of a forever
home. With her colorful, soft fur, Maize wants to
share a lifetime of kitty cuddling, napping and lap
warming and never be homeless again. Maize will
bring years of enjoyment and companionship to
the right home. For information on Maize and oth-

Both women said the
community spirit on the is-
land leads to a good atmo-
sphere at these community
gatherings, which happen
several times a year.
"It makes you get along
with everybody ... you find
a common ground," she
said.
Before moving to the
island, the two couples
both worked full-time and
had little time for socializ-
ing. Now, Jan Irving said,
they're catching up.
"We really never had
time to be social before we
retired," she said. "I think
a lot of people in our gener-
ation grew up like this and
then lost it and are looking
for it again."
