Elmer Smith Elmer Smith. 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, at home in Shelton surrounded by ts family. He was a resident of Shelton for 42 years. He was born Nov. 13, 1934, in Tacoma to Elmer and Lucy (Shafer) Smith I. He attended Richmond High School in California. He married Jeanette Bing- ham at Coeur d' Alene, Idaho on Nov. 13, 1966. He was a contract logger for Manke Lumber for many years• He also grin Christm s trees in Elmer Grays H Jr- Smith bor and :n Shelton. Smit[ was a member of the Na- tional Rifle Association and a group known as the Diggin Outers, a clan of friends wI o liked to go out searching for and digging up old bottles. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He enjoyed garden- ing, growing a large garden every year and picking wild blackberries. He enjoyed col- lecting bottles, crocks and anything old. His family said he was a giving, compassion- ate man, who did many good things for people, with the only reward being that they in turn do something good for someone else. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Smith of Shelton: daughter Theresa Wright (Charlie) of Brady and Melissa Jaime (Everardo) of Olympia; sons Kenneth Smith (Elodie), Elmer Smith III, Gordy Smith Earl Smith (Karen) and Ronald Smith (Marlene) all of Shelton; sister Lillian Lawrence and Joan Doramp; brother John Paul Troy; ten grandchildren; 17great- grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. For your convenience on- line condolences may be sent to the family at www.mc- combfh.com. Joseph Patrick Healy Joseph Patrick Healy, 88, died Friday, Dec• 23, in Grapeview. He was resident of Grape view for 5 years. He was born No 24, 1923, in Butte, Joseph Mont. to Patrick and ttealy 2012 Theresa (Lynch) Healy. He graduated from Cleve- land High School in Seattle in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He married Gloria M. Kai- ser in Fife on May 22, 1948. He worked for the Seattle Fire Department from June 1, 1947, to March 25, 1974• When World War II started, he was 16 and still in high school. He was the air raid warden (until June 7, 1943), in his community. There were '%lackouts" which meant he walked the streets at night making sure no one had lights on or people walking with flashlights, lit cigarettes or driving with headlights on their cars. On June 19, 1943, he was inducted into the Air Force at Fort Lewis, and spent three weeks in basic training in Kearns, Utah and after completion of training he went to Lowery Field in Denver, Colo., for Aircraft Armor School for 15 weeks. This training was to repair machine-guns, airplane gun sights, bombs, etc. On Dec. 10, 1943, he went to Aircraft Gunnery School at Fort Meyer Florida for 10 weeks where he learned aircraft recognition, flying planes and practiced gurmery. After 10 weeks he came to Boe- ing Field for two months to do wing assembly on B-17s. He then went to Hammer Field in Fresno, Calif. where he trained pilots for aircraft night fighting over the Pacific Ocean in A-20's "Night Fight- ers." He helped check and align gun sights and cleaned, disassembled and repaired 50 cal. machine guns and 20 mm cannons. He had been in the Air force for 21 months and now was transferred to the infantry division. On May 10, 1945, he went to Pittsburg, Calif., and was shipped out for Asiatic Pacific American theater, landing in Luzon, Philippine Islands. He was in Company G 20th Infantry securing all the rice paddies all the way to Manila. Af- ter returning to the United States for nine months, he was offered a job with the Se- attle Fire Department. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed bowling. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen Masa- niai (Bill) of Shelton, Mary Biggs (Larry) of SeaTac, Colleen Nash (Steve) of DesMoines and Gloria Sumpter of SeaTac; grand- daughters Candace Rogers of North Carolina, Heather Rebstock of North Carolina, Heidi Milanowski of Virginia Beach, Va., Sandra Biggs of SeaTac and Amy Sumpter of SeaTac; five grandsons Robert Biggs of Bellevue, Thomas Biggs of Lacey, Jo- seph Gourley of Spanaway Christopher Gourley of Kent and Garrett Sumpter of SeaTac. His wife Gloria Healy, parents Patrick and Theresa Healy, brother Dennis Healy and sister Margaret Eager preceded him in death. Memorial donations may be sent to Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice 3432 South Bay Road NE, Olym- pia, WA 98506 in memory of Joseph Healy. "Jess" Kadoun, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 22, at Alpine Way Retirement Center. He was a resident of Shelton for 64 years. He was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Lidgerwood, N.D. to Frank and Emma Rose (Polda) Kadoun. He served in the U.S. Army dur- ing World War II. He mar- ried Mary Maxine Clarence Enlow in Kadoun Shelton in June 1941. He was a lumber carrier for Simpson Timber Com- pany for 33 years, retiring in 1982. Kadoun was a member of the International Woodwork- ers of America. He enjoyed his home and his horses, cows and animals. His family described him as a "general fix-it" sort of guy who enjoyed tinkering around. After his retirement, he spent nearly everyday with his son Dietz and grandsons Jarad and Ty at Bayside Redi-Mix. His family said he was a kind and loving man who enjoyed spending time with his fam- ily. He is survived by his sons Dietz Kadoun of Shelten and Roy Kadoun (Nola) of Olym- pia; brother Alfred Kadoun (Ruth) of Shelton; grandchil- dren Marcy Wilson (Dave), Tracy Dickenson (Tony), Jared Kadoun (Jill) and Ty Kadoun (Debi) all of Shelton, Sadie Altheide (Lance) of Olympia, Kreg Kadoun of Olympia and Shane Kadoun of Tenino; 15 great-grandchil- dren; one great-great-grand- child and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife and brothers Leonard, Charley and Walter and sister Velma Saupe pre- ceded him in death. Fredrick Wyne Schindler IV Fredrick Wyne Schindler IV, 33, died Saturday, Dec• 24, in Shelton as a result of a car accident that occurred in August 2010. He was born May 16, 1978, in Shelton to Fredrick Schindler and Susan (Chal- lender) Cantlin. He worked as a laborer and a mu- sician. He enjoyed playing the drums. His Fredrick mother Su- Schindler san Cantlin of Shelton; brother Don Kinnaird of Shelton and sisters Lorraine Jager of Shelton, Roxsan Kinnaird of Olympia and Brenda Wells of Diamondhead, Miss, survive him. LeAnne Symes LeAnne Symes, 61, died Thursday, Dec• 22 at St. Pe- ter's Hospital in Olympia. She was a resident of Shelton for 25 years. She was born July 22, 1950, in Seattle to Charles Murray Syverud and Gerry Lee (Hazen). She graduated Enumclaw High School in Enumdaw in 1968 and attended Yakima Valley Commtmity College and Spokane Falls Commu- nity College. She married Skip (Clar- ence) Symes on June 25, 1995, at The Wedding Chapel of Grace in Olympia. She was previously married to Jeffery L. Wagner for 23 years; the mar- riage ended LeAnne in divorce. Symes She lived in Wash- ington and Utah during her lifetime and ws a nationally certi- fied aerobics instructor and a founding member of Fitness Follies, one of the first aero- bic instruction groups in the state. She also participated annually in the Bloomsday 12k run. After moving to Harstine Island in 1987, she continued to teach aerobics to seniors at the grange hall. She pent 16 years work- ing at Simpson Employees Credit Union and several years at American Cushion Corporation as an office ad- ministrator and production assistant. She }njoyed watching the Opr .ah ¢infrey show and reading and was physically active,both jogging and ski- ing earlier in life and later enjoying the waterways of Mason ounty by kayak with her husband and friends. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and cook- ing. She was a member of the Mason County Senior Activi- ties Center. She is survived by her husband Skip Symes of Shel- ton; mother Gerry Hazen of Indio, Calif.; daughter Dena Wagner (Sean Rasmussen) of Shelton and Keri Boysen (Steve) and of Shelton; grand- children Makayla Bousen, Ashley Boysen, Maddi Ras- mussen, Ava Rasmussen and Jack Rasmussen; roster Barbar Murphy of Concord, Calif.; Brother Marshall Bak- er of Boise, Idaho and previ- ous husband JeffWagner of Enumdaw. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Mur- ray Syverud and son Kraig Wagner. A celebration of life is to be held at a later date. Laney Thin in Laney, 55, died Saturda ty Dec. 24, at home in Sheltor He was a resident for 18 ears. He as born OCt. 29, 1956 in Victo rville, Calif,. to Therin E. Lane y and Patricia (Esqui- bel). He  tarried Sandra Reade in 1985 in Thurston County. His fam- ily shared that he was an entre- preneur, enjoyed traveling and en- joyed many Th¢rin things. Laney He was co-founder of Carangi Airships by Windcrafter; co-owner of Loop-Ez (truck tie down system); Go Figure design and maple wood used for guitors. His adventures include d opal mining in Aus- tralia, shrimping in Indonesia and being a chef. His family shared his favorite phrase in life "luck. is where preparation meets opportunity." Two ons Andrew and Cody both of Shelton survive him. He was preceded in death by wife Sandra Laney.
