Bulldogs Continued from page C-1 the pace. Coppinger said he has heard some say Thursday's match could be considered a potential preview of this year's state championship at the 125-pound divisiom "You always hope for that but when you get to the clas- sic, anything can happen," Coppinger said. "It'll be a lot of fun to watch." But Coppinger said a lot of things would have to fall into place, including more develop- ment from Pedro Joaquin. "There's a little bit of a gap to close and he [Pedro Joaquin] knows what to do to close it," he said. In the 130-pound champion- 'sip, Rene Gaspar earned a sec- ond round pinfall victory over Sultan High School's Steven Leverett with nine seconds left in the period. Brian McCarty (135 pounds) and Sam Newman (152 pounds) earned decision victo- ries for the Bulldogs in their respective weight classes. Codi Duckworth, a 2008 state wrestler who missed all of last season due to his foot being run over in a parking lot, lost in the 103-pound champi- onship to Port Angeles' Josh Basden, 10-8. Within the final 30 seconds of the third round, a takedown attempt by Duckworth was ruled out of bounds, while he was a second late to win the match on another opportunity. "Codi knows he let one get away," Coppinger said. " He's got a ways to go and he realiz- es now that he's got some work to do." Coppinger said a North Ma- son wrestler that impressed him was Matt Zink, who fin- ished co-third in the 103-pound weight class. As a freshman, Zink weighed in at' 80 pounds and earned a 14-6 win over Roches- ter's Taran Hoskin and a first round pinfall against Royhon Agostine from Sequim. "He's giving up about 25 pounds and he has such a huge heart," Coppinger said. Jacob Cofelt (140) took a co-third honor while Morgan Grewell (145) finished with a co-fifth place finish. Climbers Continued from page C-1 him in position to get the pin," Lacy said. Lacy said Barber has gone undefeated since his first round loss in Shel- ton's Holiday Tournament on December 18 after some "refocusing." "It's good to see him really get locked in and confident and aggressive," Lacy said. "He sometimes forgets how good he is." Barber's other two matches were also pin- fall victories. He defeat- ed North Kitsap High School's Augie Piehl in a 21 second pinfall and then Cascade (Everett) High School's Masood Ahmad with a fall at 5:27. Ty McCullough was 2-1 with a co-third place finish in the 103-pound bracket. His loss came m the semifinals against Kalama High Schools Mi- chael Clizbe, 5-4. "I think Ty would have wanted to win that match," Lacy said. McCullough's wins were both by one point each - 7-6 over Port An- geles' Ozzy Swagerty and 3-2 over North Kitsap's Andrew Posten. "He [McCullough] didn't have his best day but he was grinding it out," Lacy said. "That speaks a lot about how hard he works." Shelton's Jakeob Gar- rick was a co-third place wrestler in the 125-pound division with his only loss to the eventual champion North Kitsap's Jake Ve- larde, 14-3. After the loss, Garrick earned a pinfall over Ka- lama's Marcus Simpson, follwed by a 15-0 decision over Cascade's Shakail Crabb and a 9-2 deci- sion over Rochester High School's Jacob Franco. "[Garrick] has been really solid the entire month," Lacy said. "His learning curve and teach- abilityare helping him to compete and a higher level." Highclimbers who earned co-fifth place fin- ishes were Bobby Niel (119), Skyler Core (130), Shelby Salisbury (140) and Ben Anderson (215). "All of them would tell you they would expect third or better," Lacy said. But the Shelton coach said the tournament gave match experience for the Highclimbers and com- plimented North Mason's Tony Coppinger and the rest of the coaching staff. "Our kids get lots of matches," Lacy said. "They [Highclimbers] ge, t to wrestle somewhat close to home." Shelton High School and North Mason High School entered a mix of junior var- sity and a few varsity level wrestlers. Shelton's Harrison Cook finished second in the 171-pound bracket after a loss in the championship to Kingston High School's Zach Gormanson. Cook was the only Mason County wrestler to compete in a championship match. Shelon's Kala Shivers was a co-third finisher in the 125-pound division, while Dakota Adams (171) and Devyn Graden (130) also earned co-third place finishes. North Mason's Codi Duckworth (112), Cameron Niesen (112) and Morgan Grewell (145) earned co- thirds, while Matt Zink fin- shed co-fifth at 103 pounds.
