Nerves? Not so you notice 'ern
Talk about your steely nerves!
Try this test:
Confront your average white
pins, any ten in yonder bowling
alley. Address the ball. Advance
footwise. Now, roll a perfect
strike.
Oh, by the way: You've got
to produce this strike while
ignoring the rudely conspicuous
flash of a photographer's
high-intensity strobe and the
untimely and distracting howl its
user emits as his fanny interrupts
the thundering journey of
someone else's ball on its way to
the return rack.
In case you're interested,
Shelton High's top male and top
female bowlers each passed the
test with flying colors this week,
though it was hardly required that
they do so just to take part in the
season's competition, which got
underway this Wednesday.
Consider it a challenge in
concentration for Climbers Bill
Land and Karen Chamberlin,
Coach Bob Owens' current
number-one bowlers on the
Climbers' respective boys' and
girls' teams.
"Concentration is a big part
of bowling at any level," agreed
Coach Owens this week,
registering pleasure but not
surprise at the for-the-camera
strikes rolled by his two top guns.
Shelton's boys, third in the
league last year, return three
varsity veterans. Behind senior
Lang, whose 169 average through
about 40 preeason games ranks
him first, are junior Mike
Lindberg (164) and sophomore
Jim Lanman (163).
Joining them on the varsity
unit currently are jayvee veterans
Rick Sparks (159) and Shelby
West (151), both juniors.
Holding down the jayvee
spots currently - but in many
cases within challenging distance
of the varsity men - are
sophomore Mike Woods (150),
freshman Todd L und (147),
sophomore Tracy West (147),
junior Mark Deyette (147) and
junior Roger Dickinson (136).
Though the squad suffered a
big loss when sophomore veteran
Dan Goodbum (166 average)
• strained leg ligaments in a recent
skiing accident, third-year coach
Owens is guardedly optimistic.
"The boys' league especially is
very competitive," he said, "but
our team is pretty experienced
this year and it could really pay
off."
With the graduation of
Aberdeen's outstanding Paul
Gates, who led everybody last
season with a 200 average, Owens
sees Climber Lang capable of
competing for the league's top
individual honors this year.
"Bill has the potential to be
really outstanding," said his
coach. And his 169 average is
somewhat misleading. He started
out very slowly this year and
actually has been bowling closer
to a 175 average lately. He's
bowling real solid."
Solid has come to be
something of a byword for the
Climber girls of late, having
nabbed runnerup honors in the
league the past two seasons. And
back for her third straight year is
varsity veteran Karen Chamberlin.
The junior leads the Climber girls
with a 153 average.
Number two in the Climber
lineup currently is junior Tamie
Tullar. Tile other varsily veteran
on the squad, Tullar sports an
average of 147.
Rounding out the varsity unit
this year are senior Jill Barnes
(139), junior Michelle Hawk
(137) and sophomore Debbie
DeRoche (135).
The girls' jayvee squad
currently features sophomore
Terri Cuzick (131), freshman
Gina McClellan (129), junior
Laura Bruhn (124), sophomore
Suzette McClellan (115) and
junior Karen Miljour (1 ! 5).
Again, as with his boys'
varsity, Owens sees in his girls the
potential for even better things
this year. "The averages are really
comparable to last year's," he
noted, "but we may have even
more experience. And our depth
is particularly good."
Rounding out the Climbers'
squads this year are Tom
Lindberg, Dan Molinero, Diane
Larson, Mike Sobotka, Greg
Rohan, Mel Matson, Robert
Dickinson, Don Kinnard, Cheryl
Schreiner, Kenyon Hedman and
Chert Orr.
