Glen R. Hufnail
Glen R. Hufnail, 94, died
Tuesday, Jan. 3. He had
been a resident of Shelton
since 1949, living for over 50
years in the cottage that he
and his wife built on Jeffer-
son Street.
He was born in Sunny-
side to Albert C. and Anna
C. (Nel-son) Hufnail. He
grew up in Grandview and
graduated from high school
there in 1935.
He attended Washington
State College and worked in
a grocery store and later fin-
ished his college degree at
the University of Washing-
ton in 1947.
Hufnail enlisted in the
Army Air Corps in 1942,
earning his pilots wings in
March 1943. On March 3 of
the same year, in Roswell,
New Mexico, he married the
love of his life, Tig, (Ethel
L. Glenn). Shortly after, he
was sent to England and
from there flew 15 missions
before the day his plane
caught fire, and he and his
crew bailed out at 17,000
feet into the Belgium coun-
tryside. His family shared
that even in his 90s the
memory of that descent was
as if it happened yester-
day. He was picked up by
the Belgium underground
and was in hiding for six
months, before making it
back to England. He always
declared that he was not a
war hero, but the men and
women in the underground
were the real heroes, his
family said.
He was discharged from
the Army as a 1st Lt. in
1945, finished his college
degree in Seattle and then
moved to Shelton where he
worked as a bookkeeper for
Graystone of Shelton and
then Simpson Timber from
which he retired. He also
joined the Air Force Re-
serves and continued flying
and serving until 1969 when
he retired as a Lt. Col.
From early in his life he
en-joyed the mountains and
peaks of Washington, hik-
ing around the base of MIt.
Rainier while still in his
teens and later summiting
it several times. Nature,
hiking, weather and geology
remained lifelong interests.
In his retirement he worked
with the Mt. Rose trail crew
on the Olympic National
Forest for many years,
building and maintaining
hiking trails and bridges.
He also enjoyed trailering
the Western United States.
He was a member of Mt.
Moliah Lodge and Shelton
Rotary Club.
His brother Alvin Hufnail
of Grandview and many
family friends who appreci-
ated his quick mind and
wonderful sense of humor
survive him.
His wife preceded him in
death.
At his request there will
be no services.
Memorial donations may
be made to Mason General
Hospital or The Nature Con-
servancy:
