Marnie Dominy, a fitness and weight loss author and personal trainer from Union, said most people set their goals too high and end up giving up within a few weeks or a month. "A lot of people walk into January overweight and unfit and they have a resolution that is unreasonable," Domi- ny said. "My advice is to make small changes." Dominy, the author of "Choosing Your Healthy Path," a 24-week weight loss and wellness guide, said a workout and diet routine has to be built into a person's habit. Her best method for people starting their resolution in 2011 is to make one small change each month. "Start with 30 minutes, three days a week," Dominy said. "Month two, add a day. Month three, add 10 or 15 minutes. "By the end of the year, you're going three to five days, an hour a shot." Dominy explained that the same pro- cess should be used when dieting. "Month one, cut down on your por- tions. Month two, switch from simple carbohydrates to complex carbohy- drates. Month three, take out all carbo- hydrates," she said. "That's the progression I'm talking about - make realistic goals." Dominy said no matter what weight loss goal a person has, it's "imperative that you not only do cardio but resis- tance training." "Because resistance training builds the muscle and the muscle is they dy- namic substance that utilizes calories," she said. I haven't seen the final presentation of bricks around the flagpole, but Judy was up there the other day and said they look spectacular. She told me she saw ours the moment she walked to the dis- play. So, like me, we need to get up there and view the bricks and thank Sandy Murphy again for all her hard work. Probably a good time to see them would be at this month's Community Club meeting. The doors will open a little before 6 p.m. and the pot- luck dinner will start around 6:30 p.m.. I hear there is going to be a program about the new levy and bond issues that will be coming up for a vote in February. What a great way to start the year with dinner with friends and a chance to learn what is happening in our local schools. MIKE Yesterday, January 12, you CALLAGHAN missed meatloaf and baked pota- toes at the senior lunch. If that sounds good, there will be another senior lunch served on January 26. The Wednesday lunch bunch will serve turkey tettrazini with green salad and pickled beets. For a delicious desert they will have either a brownie or maybe some bread pudding - both sound good. All islanders over 50 are invited to the hall and you should be there a little before noon so you can get a good seat. The Women's Club held their meeting last week and Kathy Bykerk, secretary, sent me a copy of her minutes to share with you. The first meeting of 2011 started at 12:10 p.m. with Patti Chapman See Harstine on page B-4 Thursday, Jan 13, 2011 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Page B-1
