! SHSGIRLSBASKETBALL Climbers unable to match Thunderbirds' speed By DEAN SIEMON Shelton High School girls bas- ketball will tell you after their 85- 24 home game loss to Mount Ta- homa High School on Friday that speed kills. So do a large number of turn- overs. Shelton (0-11, 0-5 4A Narrows League) fell behind 23-4 after the first quarter, turning the ball over 19 times. Mount Tahoma (10-1, 4-1 league) held a 51-18 lead at half- time and Shelton's turnover total for the half reached 30. Nigel Warren, Shelton head coach, said the team did not exe- cute their gameplan, knowing the Thunderbirds were going to push the pace. "We wanted to slow down the pace and keep it half court," War- ren said. "We weren't success- ful when we tried to force tough passes." Warren gave credit to Mount Tahoma as a fast tempo, full court team that can transition back to offense after a turnover. '~rhey are definitely a well conditioned team, more so than teams we have faced this season," Warren said. Mount Tahoma shot 47 per- cent in total field goals, convert- ing six out of 19 3-point field goal attempts. "I knew they were going to shoot three-pointers," Warren said. "If they're not scoring lay- ups, they're shooting threes." The majority of Shelton's 45 turnovers turned into fastbreak points for the Thunderbirds, with Warren said the team has recently worked on not only re- bounding with the use of medi- cine balls, but also on blocking shots. "We have a couple of girls in- crease their verticle [jump] by two inches," Warren said. Despite the winless start to their league schedule this season, Warren is hopeful that Shelton will be ready for the second go around of the league opponents after road games at Bellarmine Prepatory School on January 12 and Olympia High School on Jan- uary 14. "It's just 'are we going to come out and work hard?" Warren said. "We're going to sneak some W's and people won't be expecting it." January 7 at Shelton High School in Shelton Mt. Shelton (3-8, 1-4 4A Narrows League) was competitive within the first three quarters, trailing by 11 before being outscored 25-7 in the fourth quarter. "For three quarters, we played pretty well," said Mark Jensen, Shelton head coach. "We got back within eight or 10 and they would blitz us and score 10." The Thunderbirds (6-5, 3-2 league) were led by senior Xavier Bazile with 33 points. Bazile ver- bally committeed to play basket- ball at the University of Idaho back in October. Shelton senior Berry Peterson, a transfer student from 1B "Oakville High School who has performed well in his first season back in Shelton since leaving in his sopho- more year, led the Highclimbers with 23 points "He [Peterson] shot the ball pretty well," Jensen said. "I think he only missed six shots and he hit nine." Senior Tre Fisher contributed 17 points for Shelton, but was held scoreless in the second half. "Tre had a really good first half but struggled in the second half," Jensen said. "We didn't shoot well tonight." Junior Curtis Wuestner had 10 points plus five rebounds, continu- ing to play at a consistent level. "Curtis had his typical Curtis game," Jensen said. "He gets four or ~ive buckets and four or five re- ~ :- :b0finds." Jensen said the Highclimb- ers are not the "quickest"group," matched up against a Mount Ta- homa squad that has a group of athletes that have full-court speed. "It's something we haven't seen in our nonleague games," Jensen said. "This is the first team we've seen play up tempo." January 7 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma Shelton 13 16 20 7 - 56 Mt.
