The Port of Allyn did not reach a
decision in negotiations to partici-
pate in Jeff Carey’s Department of
Ecology pump testing - a necessary
step in his water rights expansion
application — during its Jan. 8 spe—
cial meeting.
“As you stack water rights on top
of each other in a confined area es-
pecially one along the shoreline that
has potential for sea water intrusion
—— those are questions that need to be
answered through collection of data,
such as a test like this,” Aspect Con-
sulting Senior Associate Hydrogeolo-
gist Tyson Carlson said during the
meeting.
Carey operates the “Allyn—Carey”
water system, currently a Group B

community in Allyn.
As part of his water rights applica-
tion, the Carey well will need to un-
dergo pump testing to measure the
draw on the shared aquifer, which
requires the participation of a nearby
well on the same aquifer for observa-
tion — which is the Port of Allyn’s.
. Port commissioner Judy Scott
said the port is interested in learn-
ing whether the expansion of Carey’s
water rights would affectthe port’s
existing water rights.

in the original water right submit-
tal that they’d done back in 2013 —

Health,” Doug Piehl, Northwest Wa-
ter Systems engineer said during the
meeting. .
Piehl said there were existing
Group B systems within the area
that were approved, including the
Allyn-Carey system.
Fern Schultz, regional planner for
the Department of Health Southwest
Regional Office of Drinking Water,
said in a phone interview that typi-
cally those with the best technical,
financial and managerial capacity in
an area are identified as the desig-
nated water purveyor.
The port was offered the Depart-
ment of Health’s Drinking Water
State Revolving Fund loan to consoli-
date the Allyn-Carey system within
their own, but did not reach a deal
before the deadline to sign.
Lary Coppola, executive director
No decision reached on Allyn water system testing
of the Port of Allyn said Carey was
initially open to the idea of selling his
system to the port but later backed
out and began the process of expand-
ing his own water rights.
During the Jan. 8 special meeting
Carey said that he was still open to
the idea of selling his water system,
but he is hoping to get something out
of his investment.
“It’s been a long hard process,”
Carey said. “The port’s spent a lot of
money putting in its infrastructure,
we’ve put a lot of money to put our ‘
infrastructure plus the sewer in and
at the same time we’ve tried to work
out different ways to make this work
between both parties along the way
— but we are where we are today.”
Schultz 'said the port is still eli-
gible for the loan and could reapply
this August.

North Mason County was touched by the flood-
ing that had already impacted other parts of the
county on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
The Mason County All Hazard News Facebook
page notified the public around noon that the Ta-
huya Blacksmith Road at Milepost 3.5, the gravel
portion, was closed to all through traffic due to
flooding. 1
Residents also reported that there was substan-
tial water over the roadway, slowing traffic on NE
Bear Creek Dewatto Road near Tiger Lake.
State Route 106 in Union suffered a brief road
closure due to a slide and a tree across the road,
which the Washington State Department of Trans-
portation’s Twitter account reported was fully
blocked from 9:18 am. to 10:36 am.
occupants unharmed
Monday, Jan. 11, saw the North Mason Regional
Fire Authority dispatched to a residential structure
fire in Tahuya, on Northeast Haven Way, at 9:02
am.
At the time of the fire, the home was occupied by
a woman and her teenage child, but after waking
up to the sound of the fire crackling, they quickly
evacuated the home and were out of the residence
when emergency responders arrived.
Upon their arrival, emergency responders re-
ported that the single-story residence was fully in-
volved in flames. ‘
Due to the heavy fire involvement, firefighters
used a defensive fire attack to extinguish the fire,
preventing the fire from spreading to the surround-
ing trees and shed on site. r

aid, assisting in containing and extinguishing the fire.
One firefighter was treated on scene for asthma—
related breathing difficulties, and after his treat-
ment, he recuperated and was released back to
duty. N 0 other injuries were reported.
The Mason County Fire Marshal’s Office is cur-
rently investigating the cause of the fire.
In light of this incident, the North Mason Re-
gional Fire Authority would like to remind the com-
munity to check their residential smoke detectors,
practice their home evacuation routes and pre-plan
a family meeting place, a safe distance away from
their homes.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the
family that was affected, but the homeowners plan
to stay with their neighbors.
