Jail facility rneeting with
architects postponed
A meeting between Olympia-based KMB archi-
tects and host Mason County to discuss a proposed
new jail facility initially scheduled for Friday is
postponed until early next month.
On Tuesday, Kevin Shutty, District 1 Mason
County commissioner, told the Shelton-Mason
County Journal the meeting was rescheduled due
to the threat of inclement weather.
KMB architects is tasked with researching and
designing alternatives for a new detention facil-
ity either a standalone jail specifically for Mason
County inmates or a regional detention facility
shared with Grays Harbor County.
Friday’s meeting is rescheduled for 1 p.m. Feb.
5 in commission chambers, 411 N. Fifth St., Shel-
ton. According to Mason County briefing materials,
KMB plans to share final outcomes of its criminal
justice assessment study and future population
projections.

Heritage Grant
applications
The Mason County Historic Preservation Com-
mission is accepting applications through Friday
for the 2020 Mason County Heritage Grant pro-
gram to assist projects promoting public access to
county history. '
The Historic Preservation Commission admin-
isters the grant program, funded partially through
document recording fees collected by the/county.
Grants of up to $500 can be awarded to qualified
organizations for professional development, pub-
lic education, small capital projects, collections
management, heritage investigations and historic
preservation. Grant guidelines and additional de-

May free dump
day announced
Mason County announced last month that in
partnership with Republic Services, the United
Way of Mason County will hand out vouchers in
February for 2020’s first free dump day, scheduled
for May 22.
On Feb. 3, vouchers redeemable on May 22 at
the county’s Shelton Transfer Station (501 W.
Eells Hill Road) will be available first-come, first-
served. Vouchers will be handed out from 10 am.
to 2 pm. Monday through Friday at the United
Way of Mason County office, 536 W. Railroad Ave.,
Shelton.
To receive a voucher, customers must complete
required paperwork, have valid identification and
proof of a Mason County address. Vouchers are
good for disposal of up to 1,000 pounds of house-
hold garbage.
