James Newell, 50, died
Thursday, Jan. 5, at Fire
Lane Health and Rehabilita-
tion Center in Shelton. He
was a resident of Grapeview.
He was born Sept. 5, 1961,
along with an identical twin
brother at Tacoma General
Hospital, to John and Con-
stance Newell (Schoephoer-.
ster).
He graduated from Wilson
High School, attended Grays
Harbor Community College
and Clover Park Vocational/
Technical School for welding.
He enjoyed his children,
hunting with family and
friends, and fishing.
He worked in the public
works sectors for Puyallup,
City of Federal way and the
City of Covington.
He is survived by son Cam-
eron Scott Newell of Puyal-
lup and Taylor Thompson of
Marshall University, W.Va.;
brother John Gregg (Valerie);
sister Valerie Wilkerson
(Mark) of Spokane; nieces and
nephews John Casey, Slade,
Suzanne and Sheldon Maul.
There will be a celebration
of life at 3 p.m. on Saturday,
Jan. 21 at the Mason Benson
Club.

Johanna Agnes Aardal, 99,
died Wednesday, Jan. 11, at
Four Seasons Convalescent
Home in North Hollywood,
Ca~. She was a former resi-
dent of Matlock.

Coalhurst,
Canada to
Dingeman
and Johan-
na Tack.
The family
moved to
Matlock in
1920.
She
attended Mary M. Knight
School.
She married Edwin Aardal
on July 5, 1935, in Shelton
and moved to'Hollywood, Ca-
lif., where he worked for Walt
Disney Studios.
The family said she was an
accomplished china painter
and oil painter. She was a
member of the Valley Porce-
lain Artists Association.
She is survived by her
sister Agnes Stangland of
Aberdeen; sons Gary Edwin
Aardal and his wife, Carol, of
Lyrmwood and John Duane
Aardal of North Hollywood,
Calif.; granddaughter Holly
Patton of Poulsbo; great-
grandchildren Spencer Kenan
and Milan Kenan both of
Poulsbo and numerous nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents and brother
John Tack and sister Mary
Kent.
A memorial service will be
held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan.
24, at Hope Chapel in Shelton
and she will be interned at
Shelton Memorial Cemetery.

Merlin Howard Dittmer,
85, died on Wednesday, Jan.
11. He was a resident of Shel-
ten since 1964.
Dittmer was born in Ev-
erett, on June 29, 1926, to

ing to battletdamaged ships.
He married Peggy O. Price
on Dec. 7, 1946, in St. John's
Episcopal Church, Snohom-
ish. |
In 1964, following a promo-
tion to Corrections Sgt. at the
Monroe RefOrmatory, he was
transferred ~o the new cor-
rectional facility just outside
Shelton. i

new path of dance aerobics
and founded her own studio,

began teaching classes for
the YMCA, Evergreen Col-
lege, Sheltorl Athletic Club
and Firlane~In addition, she
sold advertising for KMAS

Millicent E. Poole
Millicent E. Poole, 103,
died Dec. 10, peacefully at
home surrounded by family.
She was born June 24,
1908, in Hitchcock, S.D., to
John Murphy and Lufa (Ole-
son) Murphy. She had seven
siblings all of who preceded
her in death.
She married Kenneth A.
Poole on May 4, 1935, in Mo-
bridge, S.D.
She was a homemaker,
taught school in South Dako-
ta and substituted in Tacoma
area school districts.
She enjoyed Christmas,
birthdays
and week-
ends with
family. She
traveled in
the United
States, Eu-
rope, Asia
and North
Africa. She
Millicent enjoyed
dancing,
Poole walk-
ing with
friends, and water aerobics
at the YMCA, bridge at the
Point Defiance Senior Center,
golf at Meadow Park and her
home on Treasure Island in
Grapeview. She was a lifelong
member of First Congrega-
tional Church.
She is survived by her sons

John A. MacRae
John A. MacRae, 76, died
Wednesday, Jan. 22, sudden-
ly while working outdoors. He
lived in Shelton his entire life.
He was born March 31,
1935, to John G. and M.
Dorothy (Sutton) MacRae in
Shelton.
He and his sisters went to
Shelton schools and he gradu-
ated from Irene S. Reed High
School in 1953. His family
said he remained close friends
with many

~ mates.

served in
the U.S.
Coast
Guard from
1953 to
1957 as a
boatswains

the North and South Poles.
In 1954 the Northwind was
part of a three-ship mission,
the first to meet with ships
sailing from the east and west
to meet in the Northwest Pas-
sage. This cruise was also the
first where vessels transited
McClure Strait and circum-
navigated Banks Island. He,
also participated in Operation
Deep .Freeze, as part of Task
Force 43 in the Antarctic.
After his discharge, he
returned to Shelton where he
started Totem Wood Prod-
ucts, first operating a small
mill and then later branching
out as a contract logger which
he continued to do for 30
some years.
In 1961 he married Marion
(Laine) Rishel.
He managed the fam-
ily tree farm, which became
his full time job. His family
shared that this was a source
of great pride for him to see
his father's dream of keeping
the land and forest in its most
pristine and natural beauty
for his family and posterity.
William H. Phipps
William H. Phipps, 73,
died Sunday, Jan. 8, at
home in Shelton. He was a
resident of Shelton for nine
years.
He was born Jan. 29,
1938, in Page, Ky. to John
and Losie (Ealy) Phipps.
He served in the U.S.
Marine Corps during the
Korean conflict from 1954
to 1959 and was honorably
discharged
~at the
rank of
sergeant.
He
married
Sherryl
Exline in
Vancouver,
on Dec.
William 18, 1976.
He was
Phipps previously
married to
Carole Corder, in 1959, until
her death in 1976.
His working career
spanned 40 plus years in the
floor covering industry. He
began with Hollytex Carpet
Mills in various capacities
from plant maintenance, to
plant manager, oversaw the
construction and brought
to production a new mill in
Pennsylvania and eventually
moved into wholesale sales.
He traveled extensively in
numerous sales manager
positions across the U.S.,
working for a variety of
carpet mills. ..... ..... ....
His family said he
spent the majority of his
life sharing his carpentry,
fishing and hunting skills
with family members. They
shared that there was
nothing he couldn't create
- from beautiful pieces of
furniture to assisting with
grandkids with school and
hobby projects.
He is survived by his wife

Patrick David Stuart, 60,

Shelton. He was a resident of

John David Rayson
John David "Dave" Rayson, 94,
died Saturday, January 7, 2012
in Shelton. He was a life long
resident of Shelton.
He was born September 13, 1917
in Centralia, to John W. and
Beatrice (Vesey) Rayson.
He graduated from Irene S. Reed
High School in 1937.
He served in the U.S. Navy
from November of 1941to his
honorable discharged in October
of 1945 at the rank of Chief
Motor Machinist's Mate.
He married Ruby Strikes in
Chatsworth, Ill. on July 22, 1977.
He worked for Simpson Plywood
division for 27 years retiring in
1980
His family said he was an all
around good guy who truly loved
his family and friends. He was
an award-winning gardener and
enjoyed being in the woods,
hunting, fishing, trapping and
cutting wood. He traveled the
country with his wife in their
trailer and camped with friends.
He was a devout Catholic and
member of St. Edwards Church,
the IWA Local 3-38, VFW and
supported many veteran and
senior organizations.
He is survived by his nephew
Bill Bailey of California; sister-
in-law Vi Adams of Lakewood;
stepdaughters Yulanee McKnight
of Texas,
Cheryl Craig (Rob) of Texas and
Jeanette Zimmerman (Mike)of
Illinois; stepson Mark Haberkom
(Mona) of Illinois and numerous
other extended family members.
His parents, wife Ruby in 2007
and a brother preceded him in
death.
A service will be held at 11 a.m.
on Friday, Jan. 20 at St. Edwards
Catholic Church, Shelton, with
a burial to follow at Shelton
Memorial Park.
