SPORTS BRIEFS
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bremerton 65, North Mason 39
The North Mason boys basket-
ball team lost Jan. 10 at 2A Olympic
League opponent Bremerton.
Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs,
according to coach Stove Hackett.
"We didn't take care of the ball very
well and let their athleticism take
over," said Hackett in an email to the
Journal.
North Mason trailed by 12 at the
end of the first quarter but were only
outscored by three points in the sec-
ond, forcing a 15-point deficit going
into the half.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 11 in
the third thanks to great energy from
Jeremy Carnahan, but Bremerton
pulled away in the fourth to win by 26.
Senio.r Kevin Burrell-Briggs and
junior Trey Fisher posted 11 each for
22 of the Bulldogs' 39 points.
Mary M. Knight 59, Wishkah
Valley 8
The Mary M. Knight Owls boys bas-
ketball team on Jan. 10 won its away
conference game against Wishkah Val-
ley 59-8.
The Owls held their opponent score-
less through the half, scoring 37 for
themselves.
Mary M. Knight scored 15 in the
third and seven points in the fourth to
close it out. Senior Quentin Narrance
posted 10 points and a team-high five
steals for the Owls.
Junior Jason Shaw tallied seven
assists, and sophomores Zack Thomp-
son and Reese Tottie each pulled down
four rebounds for the Owls.
Yelm 67, Shelton 60
The Highclimbers boys basketball
team posted a loss Jan. 11 at confer-
ence-opponent Yelm.
Shelton started off slow in the first
quarter and had problems with shots
just not falling, according to coach
Derrick Pringle.
The second quarter was better for
the Highclimbers, as they outscored
Yelm 14-5.
"We settled down and switched
from a man-to-man to a 3-2 zone de-
fense. It forced them to make some
bad shots," Pringle said.
At the half, the Highclimbers were
down by four, but in the second half
Shelton struggled with shooting.
In the fourth quarter, Shelton
closed the margin to one point, but af-
ter a few errors and fouls, Yelm went
up 54-51 with 2:30 left. Shelton was
forced to foul to stop the clock, but it
just wasn't enough.
"We just got a slow start. We need
to come out with more aggressiveness
at the start and take over the game,"
Pringle said.
Tyler Giraldes led the Highclimbers
in scoring column with 16 points and
nine rebounds, and was followed close-
ly by Caleb Hitsman with 12 points
and Kyle Kimball with 11.
"We still have a shot to finish
strong; we just have to buckle down
and play our type of ball, which is to
outwork our opponent from start to
finish," Pringle said.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mary M. Knight 40, Wishkah
Valley 27
The Mary M. Knight girls basket-
ball team won a Jan. 10 away confer-
ence game against Wishkah Valley.
The Owls trailed in the first quarter
by six and matched Wishkah Valley's
scoring in through the second, putting
them down by six at the half.
Mary M. Knight scored a total of 31
points in the second half and held the
Loggers to 12.
Sophomore Kaylee Sowle had a tri-
pie-double for the Owls with 19 points,
22 rebounds and 22 steals.
Senior Shawqueea Parker followed
close behind with 14 rebounds.
Yelm 63, Shelton 44
The Shelton girls basketball team
dropped a home decision Jan. 11 to
3A South Sound Conference opponent
Yelm.
The Highclimbers started out slow
in the first half, only scoring five
points in the second quarter.
"We just couldn't get anything go-
ing," said coach Aaron Leth. "We made
some dumb mistakes and had a lot of

fouls."
The Highclimbers played better
man-to-man defense in the second
half, forcing turnovers and scoring on
those turnovers.
"Jordyn Peterson had some good
clean picks, but Yelm was shooting
lights out against us. We just couldn't
make a stop on defense, and that re-
ally hurt us," Leth said.
Peterson had six steals and three
rebounds, while senior Paige Johnson
scored 13 points and five rebounds.
"We can't look back now. We must
focus and look ahead to the next game.
We will take it game by game and
work on being more patient on of-
fense," Leth said.
Shelton 58, Capital 27
The Highclimber girls got off to a
quick start in the first half leading by
13 at the half, but the real pull-away
was in the third quarter when Shelton
posted 20 points to Capital's five.
On Jan. 13, Shelton beat the Capi-
tal Cougars.
Paige Johnson led the team with 12
points, four rebounds and one assist.
Morgan Leach was a great lift off the
bench, scoring 11 in the third quarter
and shooting 100 percent from the
floor in the second half.
"We worked really well as a team
on defense and made huge improve-
ment from Wednesday's game,, coach
Aaron Leth said. "We came out and
played great man defense and shot the
ball well."
GIRLS BOWLING
Capital 4, Shelton 1
The Shelton girls bowling team
fell to Capital on Jan. 10 at Westside
Lanes in Olympia.
The Climbers were led by sopho-
more Kaylee Schiltor, who bowled a
307 series for two games, posting the
high scores for Shelton in both games.
She was trailed by Shelton's Rebecca
Robinson, who posted a 281 total for
the series against the Cougars.
Shelton trailed Capital by 22 pins
in the first game, but fell in the second
game by 56.
Shelton 5,
North Thurston 0
The Shelton High School girls bowl-
ing team beat North Thurston 5-0 on
Jan. 12 at Westside Lanes.
The Highclimbers bowled a 691 in
game one, beating North Thurston by
78 pins and bowled a 675 in game two,
posting a winning margin of 67 pins.
Rebecca Robinson led Shelton girls
with a 296 series in two games. She
was trailed closely by teammate Kay-
lee Schilter, who bowled a 295 series.
BOYS SWIM AND DIVE
South Sound Relays
On Jan. 14, the boys swam at The
Evergreen State College against eight
other teams and placed fourth overall.
"This is a fun meet with only relays.
The scoring really lends itself to large
teams, and it does not include diving.
We are a medium-size team with a
strong diving program, so we were at
a disadvantage against the winning
teams," coach Chad Youngquist said.
The Highclimber team of Taylor
Toney and Sam Womer placed second
in the 100-yard freestyle relay, posting
a time of 48.27 seconds.
The leadoff swimmers' times count-
ed for qualifying, so they took advan-
tage of the meet to give swimmers a
chance to qualify in events they may
not normally get a shot at.
Womer also crushed his 200 free-
style time of 2:00.86, which is a 14-sec-
ond drop and would have qualified
him for districts if he had been the
leadoff swimmer. He also qualified in
the 100 freestyle with a 54.38.
Jacob Schreiber qualified in two
events. He made it in the 200 freestyle
with a 2:04.83, and in the 100 free-
style with 56.21.
There were many personal bests
in this meet, but many were the sec-
ond leg of relays, so they do not count
other than to gain experience.
That experience is especially impor-
tant given the league championships
will be at The Evergreen State College
pool.
