Senior RC TC student pursuing Asian cuu ural studies By DEAN SIEMON Shelton High School senior Tatiana Western is one of the members of Shel- ton's Navy Junior Reserve Officer's Train- ing Camp. Western began during her second term in her freshman year. "I've always supported the military and a lot of my friends joined," Western said. At the time, the NJROTC was offered as a phyical ed- ucation credit through the high school. "It attracted more stu- dents because it was more interactive than a PE," Western said. In NJROTC, Western has been apart of the SHS drill team for three years and involved with the color guard and strength team. "I'm the operations offi- cer so I plan everything," she said. But Western has also earned the rank as cadet lieutenant with the Shelton NJROTC. "I'm the only other person other than the executive officer who has lieutenant," she said. "Everyone else stops at junior lieutenant grade." In addition, Western still focuses on her coursework, including a naval science course and works at Shelton Valley Chris- tian Childhood Development Center in the daycare. Western said with all of her NJROTC responsibilities, things get "really hectic." "And I do planning so I bring work Tatiana Western home all the time," she said. Western has already decided to go to college to study linguistics and intelli- gence, tbcusing specifically on the Asian and Mandarin cultures. "In general I like history," she said. "But the Asian culture is so much different from west- ern culture. Their artwork ... their history ... I have to immerse myself in the culture." Western said she has applied to six different schools but her top three choices are the University of Idaho, The Citadel, con- sidered the military college of South Carolina, and the University of Pennsylva- nia. Western said she chose her schools based on hav- ing their ROTC program and lead to the navy. "I want to go through the ROTC in college, then I can go in as an officer in the military," she said. "Having a degree will help make me more special- ized in my job." Western said if there are students at SHS that are on the fence about joining the NJROTC, one misconception is joining the military after graduation. "Out of my class of 14 kids, only four or five tops are joining any branch of mili- tary," she said. Western said one of the aspects of life in Mason County she will miss is not having far to go before meeting the woods. "I go hiking with my parents," she said.
