Outdoors Continued from page C-1 shots to let them know we are here." With a smile I agreed and reloaded my 12 gauge. Back to telling stories, I interrupted Bob to let him know that often, after some shots, the mass of birds lift off and pour over us by the hundreds. Not knowing how right I was, there off in the distance I could see a black cloud stirring about. Looking like a tornado, I could tell that soon they would be headed our way. Telling Bob to get ready, no less than a hundred ducks came pouring over us in quick succession. Again the guns fired. This time I was pleased to see that Bob had dropped one out of the flock, "Great shot!" I re- marked. Pulling anchor and re- trieving the bird, it was soon" evident that the birds were now moving. Flock after flock passed by and both Bob and I made a couple more shots with success. On this trip I had elect- ed to not bring along my new Chocolate Lab pup, Rider, and our method of retrieval was my old trout net. Scooping up two more birds, I noticed I was out of shells• and the light was fading, I made the last call, as it was time to head home. A successful trip, even if it was a short one. Both Bob and I agreed, we need to do this more often. Owls win second game of season By DEAN SIEMON Mary M. Knight High School girls basketball earned their second win of the season on Saturday at North River High School, 32-26. The Owls (2-6, 2-1 1B Coastal League) had ear- ly struggles, veXh eight points in each of the quar- ters. "The gym is small and not much room to spread the court out," said Owls head coach Lance Valley. Miranda Sowle scored four of her six points in the second quarter and had seven rebounds in the first half. "She stepped in at point guard for me' and played well," Valley said. The Owls won the re- bounding battle with 27 offensive rebounds. The win came after a league loss at Oakville High School on Friday, 37-33. The Owls started with a 11-7 first quarter lead, but were outscored 20-12 in the second and third quarters. "We started out great scoring," Valley said. "But then we couldn't buy a basket." The Owls were 14 of 59 from the field in the game and unable to score on the • inside lanes. "When you don't hit kill shots, you don't win," Val- ley said. Another alarming sta- tistic was Olympia out- rebounding Shelton 20 to nine in the second half, an issue that has plagued the Highclimbers this season. Olympia had two players at six-foot-five (Alex Weber- Brader and Cole Voorhees) in addition to another four players at six-foot-three and above. Jensen said his two six- foot-five players, Jon Own- by and John Padgett, were "stocky" when compared to the larger Bears. "We've gone up against teams that are big and physical and our bigs aren't exactly physical," Jensen said. The low rebounding num- bers for Shelton could be at- tributed to the quick shots from some of the players, Jensen said. Berry Peterson only scored two points in the game, missing several lay ups and mid-range jumpers. His lone field goal came with 10 seconds left in the first half. "He missed a lot of shots early and I think he got his head down after that," Jen- sen said. "I thought he lost his focus and got frustrated and when that happens, it sort of goes downhill." After the road win at Sta- dium High School on Janu- ary 5, Jensen said the High- climbers have not competed well in the last three games. "I think we sort of pla- teu and sort of went back- wards," Jensen said. "Part of it is a competition but it's mainly the way we've com- peted."
