William J. McHenry
William McHenry
William Joshua McHenry, a
former Shelton resident, died
Monday, January 11. He was 82
and a resident of Yakima.
He was born February 7, 1916,
in Pune, India, to William Hume
and Nola Alice (Hiler) McHenry,
missionary parents who lived and
worked in small villages in Cen-
tral India. He attended Vincent
Hill School in Mussourie, India,
through the junior college level.
In 1937, he enrolled at Pacific
Union College in Angwin, Califor-
nia, to complete his college de-
gree. It was there that he met Ai-
mee Brown of Chico, California.
They were married August 10,
1939, and dedicated their lives to
mission service in India.
Over 43 years, they developed
hundreds of small village schools
throughout India, training teach-
ers and developing curriculum.
As educational secretary for the
Southern Asia Division of Sev-
enth-day Adventists, he organ-
ized Christian youth camps and
other youth outreach programs.
In the 1950s, he spent five years
on the staff of Mount Ellis Acade-
my in Bozeman, Montana.
He retired in 1981 to Shelton
to reside with his youngest
daughter, Winnetta Martin, and
her family. Although retired, he
continued to be active in his local
church as elder and as preacher
in many area churches.
The McHenrys moved to Yaki-
ma in 1996 for health reasons and
to be close to their eldest daugh-
ter, Nola Aichele and her family.
He will be most remembered as
a loving, caring father, devoted
husband and Christian role mod-
el, his family said.

Charles Sands
Charles "Popeye" Sands, a
Shelton resident for the past two
months, died of heart-related
problems Friday, January 8, at
his home in Shelton.
He was 67 years old and was a
former longtime Spokane resi-
dent.
Mr. Sands was born on May
12, 1931, in Belvidere, Illinois, to
Bill and Mary (Pope) Sands.
He married JoAnn (Clarke)
Sands on March 17, 1951.
Mr. Sands was a commercial
artist, truck driver and restau-
rant owner. He owned and oper-
ated Signs by Sands and New
York Coney Island, both in Spo-
kane.
He was district manager of Al-
coholics Anonymous in Spokane
and was a longtime "friend of Bill
W.," his family said.
He enjoyed cooking, designing
and building.
He is survived by wife JoAnn
Sands of Shelton, formerly of Spo-
kane; daughters Sindy Sands of
Vancouver and Candy Hunger-
ford and her husband Jim of
Union; and granddaughter Liana
Hungerford of Union.
A memorial gathering was held
Saturday, January 16, in Union.
Inurnment will be at Holy Cross
Cemetery in Spokane.
Arrangements were under the

Glen C. Parr

Glen C. Parr, a esident of Capi-
tol Hill in Shelton for 40 years.
Mr. Parr died of cancer Monday,
November 23, at his home in
Shelton. He was 72.
He is survived by wife Shirley

and Ray Parr, both of Shelton;
daughters Taralea Townsend and
Karen White, both of Shelton;
grandson Michael Dahman of
Shelton and Leah Martin of Shel-

band Eric of Portland, Oregon,
and three great-grandchildren,
Ion, Cody and Kinley VanOrden.
Other survivors include Pat
Bloomfield, Jenna Keller and
Amythest Rose Keller; and nu-
merous nieces and nephews.

Ethel R. Whitener
Longtime Kamilche resident
Ethel R. Whitener died of natural
causes Monday, January 18, at
her home. She was 94 and had
lived in Kamilche for 72 years.
She was born December 26,
1904, in Caddo County, Oklaho-
ma Indian Territory, to Charles
David and Martha Jane (Bass)
Richards.
She married Percy Wayne
Whitener on July 4, 1931, in Spo-
kane. He preceded her in death in
April, 1961.
Mrs. Whitener worked as a
helper at Green Thumb, at the
Squaxin Island Tribal Center
with the summer youth program
for 16 years, and at Shelton Gen-
eral Hospital.
She was a member of the
Squaxin Island Indian Tribe, Ka-
milche Christian Fellowship
Church, and the Mason County
Historical Society, and she
served on the advisory board for
Olympic College.
Her interests included giving
money to missionaries and evan-
gelists. She enjoyed children, can-
vas painting, crocheting, knitting,
quiltmaking, caregiving, educa-
tion and the events of OysterFest,
particularly the elders' salmon
dinners.
Mrs. Whitener was also preced-
ed in death by granddaughter
Chrystle Roxanne Larson in 1987
and daughter Ethel Martha Ann
Tiroux in May, 1998.
She is survived by sons David
Whitener Sr. of Shelton and Don-
ald Lynn Whitener of Kamilche;
daughters Mary whitener-Fletch-
er of Kamilche and Joanna Ruby
Fuller of Shelton; and by 19
grandchildren, 14 great-
grandchildren and one great-
great grandchild.
Visitation was held yesterday
and will continue from 9 to 11
a.m. Thursday, January 21, at
McComb Funeral Home in Shel-
ton. A funeral service will be held
at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 21,
at The ROCK, (formerly the Ka-
milche Christian Fellowship
Church), at 101 SE Whitener
Road in Kamilche. Burial at Shel-
ton Memorial Park will follow the
funeral service.

beau, 72, died at his home Sun-
day, January 17.

Jeanne Robb
Jeanne Robb, a resident of
Shelton for 40 years, died of com-
plications from diabetes Wednes-
day, January 13, at her home in
Shelton. She was 71.
She was born February 19,
1927, on a farm in LaPrairie
Township, Minnesota, to Harold
and Agnes (Lundy) Fletcher.
She married Clyde Robb in Be-
midji, Minnesota, in 1953. In
1955, she and Mr. Robb moved to
Seattle, where she worked as a
secretary.
The Robb family moved to
Shelton in 1959. Mrs. Robb
worked as a secretary for Simp-
son Timber Company, then for
Mutual Valley of Seattle, the con-
tractor that built the Washington
Corrections Center near Shelton.
When the prison opened, she be-
came executive secretary for the
superintendent.
After retiring, Mrs. Robb de-
voted her time to activities at
Faith Lutheran Church in Shel-
ton, including its Rebecca Circle.
She loved music and sang in the
choir and led singing on Saturday
mornings at Fir Lane Terrace
Health and Rehabilitation Cen-
ter. She spearheaded the catering
project at her church that served
the Shelton Noon Kiwanis Club,
retired teachers association and
Shelton Rotary Club for many
years.
She played the piano, organ,
guitar and accordion. She enjoyed
fund-raising, sewing, making
crafts and watercolor painting.
She was a member of the Penin-
sula Art Association and was very
artistic, her family said.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Clyde Robb of Shelton; son
Ross Robb and his wife Linda of
Lacey; daughters Pare Boad and
her husband Steve and Karen
Robb-Peterson and Sal Chavez,
all of Shelton; grandchildren Ty
Robb of Pacifica, California, Tami
Robb of Olympia, Christian Boad
of Shelton, Terri Bond of Shelton,
Carter Boad of Lynnwood and Sal
Chavez Jr. of Shelton; great-
grandchildren Grayden Boad and
Fletcher Boad, both of Shelton.
Also surviving are her sister,
Gerry Chromy of Seattle, and
adopted family Jorge and Nancy
Mejia and their sons Johan and
Mike of Gig Harbor.
A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 21,
at Faith Lutheran Church in
Shelton. Inurnment will follow.

Dorothy A. Gordon, who resid-
ed in the Shelton-Olympia area
for a number of years, died of
complications from a stroke Fri-
day, January 8, at Fir Lane
Health and Rehabilitation Center
in Shelton. She was 93.

at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23,
at Hope Chapel, 421 West E
Street in Shelton. Pastor Neil
Thompson will officiate.

Helen B. Hutson
Helen Bernice Hutson, a Shel-
ton resident, died January 11 of
complications from a stroke. She
was 72.
She was born April 14, 1926, in
Morgantown, West Virginia.
She was a resident of Mason
County from 1955 to 1980, then
moved to Anchorage, Alaska, for
16 years, returning to Shelton in
1996.
She is survived by sons Frank
Hutson of Shelton, Curt Hutson
of Matlock, Roland Hutson of
Shelton and Carl Hutson of An-
chorage, Alaska; daughters Nor-
ma May and Maxine Giles, both
of Shelton; and numerous
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
At Mrs. Hutson's request,
there will be no services.
Minnie A. Moyer
Minnie A. Moyer, a resident of
Shelton for the past 13 years,
died of natural causes Saturday,
January 16, at an adult care
home in Shelton. She was 87.
She was born March 21, 1911,
at Fort Benton, Montana, to Ed-
ward and Jesse (Maze) Harris.
She was a homemaker who en-
joyed spending time with her
family.
She was a member of the Bap-
tist Church and the senior center
in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She
moved to Shelton from Bonners
Ferry.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, James Moyer, in
1969; sons William Matthews and
George Matthews; daughter Rose
Brown and two infant daughters.
Mrs. Moyer is survived by
daughters Delores Rodius of Shel-
ton and Mary Jane Davis of Illi-
nois; daughter-in-law Shirly Mat-
thews of Spokane; son-in-law Ern
Brown of Shelton; sisters Edna
Matthews of Ellensburg and
Jesse Tennison and Rose Tenni-
son, both of Tacoma; and 18
grandchildren, 27 great-

great grandchildren.

Sterling Coe "Red" Powers Jr.,
a Shelton resident for the past
eight years, died of heart disease
Friday, January 15, at Mason
General Hospital. He was 74.
He was born January 10, 1925,
in Miami Beach, Florida, to Sterl-
ing C. and Florence (Simon) Pow-
ers. He married Delores (Deisler)
Powers in 1961.
He worked as parts manager
for Cummins Diesel in Ohio.
Mr. Powers liked his computer,
gardening, woodworking, his
home and his wife. He was happy
puttering around the home they
shared in Shelton, his family
said.
He is survived by wife Delores
Powers of Shelton; daughter Kar-
an Stapleton of Franklin Furnace,
Ohio; sisters Polly Harman of
Green Valley, Arizona, and Jane
Lambert of Ironton, Ohio; and
two grandchildren, Shari CaudilI
and Carrie Jo Smith, both in
Ohio.
At the family's request, there
will be no services.

Frances Baker
Frances "Peg" Baker, a resi-
dent of" Lilliwaup for the past 20
years, died after a battle with
lung cancer Friday, January 15,
at the Alpine Way Retirement
Apartments in Shelton. She was
84.
She was born April 26, 1914, in
Sumas to Nicholas and Gertrude
(Marquette) Fitzgerald.
She married George G. Baker
on June 25, 1955, in Lewiston,
Idaho. She was a homemaker and
was a 4-H assistant leader while
her daughter was growing up.
Mrs. Baker loved gardening
and grew beautiful flowers, her
family said. She also enjoyed
crocheting and playing pinochle.
She is survived by husband
George Baker of Lilliwaup;
daughter Jody Fall of Rochester;
brother Dan Fitzgerald of Victor-
ville, California; and one grand-
daughter.
At the family's request, no
services will be held.

Jeanne Robb
Jeanne Robb, a resident of
Shelton for 40 years, died of com-
plications from diabetes Wednes-
day, January 13, at her home in
Shelton. She was 71.
She was born February 19,
1927, on a farm in LaPrairie
Township, Minnesota, to Harold
and Agnes (Lundy) Fletcher.
She married Clyde Robb in Be-
midji, Minnesota, in 1953. In
1955, she and Mr. Robb moved to
Seattle, where she worked as a
secretary.
The Robb family moved to
Shelton in 1959. Mrs. Robb
worked as a secretary for Simp-
son Timber Company, then for
Mutual Valley of Seattle, the con-
tractor that built the Washington
Corrections Center near Shelton.
When the prison opened, she be-
came executive secretary for the
superintendent.
After retiring, Mrs. Robb de-
voted her time to activities at
Faith Lutheran Church in Shel-
ton, including its Rebecca Circle.
She loved music and sang in the
choir and led singing on Saturday
mornings at Fir Lane Terrace
Health and Rehabilitation Cen-
ter. She spearheaded the catering
project at her church that served
the Shelton Noon Kiwanis Club,
retired teachers association and
Shelton Rotary Club for many
years.
She played the piano, organ,
guitar and accordion. She enjoyed
fund-raising, sewing, making
crafts and watercolor painting.
She was a member of the Penin-
sula Art Association and was very
artistic, her family said.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Clyde Robb of Shelton; son
Ross Robb and his wife Linda of
Lacey; daughters Pare Boad and
her husband Steve and Karen
Robb-Peterson and Sal Chavez,
all of Shelton; grandchildren Ty
Robb of Pacifica, California, Tami
Robb of Olympia, Christian Boad
of Shelton, Terri Bond of Shelton,
Carter Boad of Lynnwood and Sal
Chavez Jr. of Shelton; great-
grandchildren Grayden Boad and
Fletcher Boad, both of Shelton.
Also surviving are her sister,
Gerry Chromy of Seattle, and
adopted family Jorge and Nancy
Mejia and their sons Johan and
Mike of Gig Harbor.
A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 21,
at Faith Lutheran Church in
Shelton. Inurnment will follow.

Dorothy Gordon
Dorothy A. Gordon, who resid-
ed in the Shelton-Olympia area
for a number of years, died of
complications from a stroke Fri-
day, January 8, at Fir Lane
Health and Rehabilitation Center
in Shelton. She was 93.
A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23,
at Hope Chapel, 421 West E
Street in Shelton. Pastor Neil
Thompson will officiate.

Helen B. Hutson
Helen Bernice Hutson, a Shel-
ton resident, died January 11 of
complications from a stroke. She
was 72.
She was born April 14, 1926, in
Morgantown, West Virginia.
She was a resident of Mason
County from 1955 to 1980, then
moved to Anchorage, Alaska, for
16 years, returning to Shelton in
1996.
She is survived by sons Frank
Hutson of Shelton, Curt Hutson
of Matlock, Roland Hutson of
Shelton and Carl Hutson of An-
chorage, Alaska; daughters Nor-
ma May and Maxine Giles, both
of Shelton; and numerous
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
At Mrs. Hutson's request,
there will be no services.
Minnie A. Moyer
Minnie A. Moyer, a resident of
Shelton for the past 13 years,
died of natural causes Saturday,
January 16, at an adult care
home in Shelton. She was 87.
She was born March 21, 1911,
at Fort Benton, Montana, to Ed-
ward and Jesse (Maze) Harris.
She was a homemaker who en-
joyed spending time with her
family.
She was a member of the Bap-
tist Church and the senior center
in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She
moved to Shelton from Bonners
Ferry.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, James Moyer, in
1969; sons William Matthews and
George Matthews; daughter Rose
Brown and two infant daughters.
Mrs. Moyer is survived by
daughters Delores Rodius of Shel-
ton and Mary Jane Davis of Illi-
nois; daughter-in-law Shirly Mat-
thews of Spokane; son-in-law Ern
Brown of Shelton; sisters Edna
Matthews of Ellensburg and
Jesse Tennison and Rose Tenni-
son, both of Tacoma; and 18
grandchildren, 27 great-
grandchildren and two great-
great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held
at 1 p.m. Friday, January 22, at
Hope Chapel, 421 West E Street,
Shelten. Burial will be at Shelton
Memorial Park.

Sterling Powers Jr.
Sterling Coe "Red" Powers Jr.,
a Shelton resident for the past
eight years, died of heart disease
Friday, January 15, at Mason
General Hospital. He was 74.
He was born January 10, 1925,
in Miami Beach, Florida, to Sterl-
ing C. and Florence (Simon) Pow-
ers. He married Delores (Deisler)
Powers in 1961.
He worked as parts manager
for Cummins Diesel in Ohio.
Mr. Powers liked his computer,
gardening, woodworking, his
home and his wife. He was happy
puttering around the home they
shared in Shelton, his family
said.
He is survived by wife Delores
Powers of Shelton; daughter Kar-
an Stapleton of Franklin Furnace,
Ohio; sisters Polly Harman of
Green Valley, Arizona, and Jane
Lambert of Ironton, Ohio; and
two grandchildren, Shari CaudilI
and Carrie Jo Smith, both in
Ohio.
At the family's request, there
will be no services.

Frances Baker
Frances "Peg" Baker, a resi-
dent of" Lilliwaup for the past 20
years, died after a battle with
lung cancer Friday, January 15,
at the Alpine Way Retirement
Apartments in Shelton. She was
84.
She was born April 26, 1914, in
Sumas to Nicholas and Gertrude
(Marquette) Fitzgerald.
She married George G. Baker
on June 25, 1955, in Lewiston,
Idaho. She was a homemaker and
was a 4-H assistant leader while
her daughter was growing up.
Mrs. Baker loved gardening
and grew beautiful flowers, her
family said. She also enjoyed
crocheting and playing pinochle.
She is survived by husband
George Baker of Lilliwaup;
daughter Jody Fall of Rochester;
brother Dan Fitzgerald of Victor-
ville, California; and one grand-
daughter.
At the family's request, no
services will be held.
