Mason County Little League
kicks off '99 player registration
this Saturday with an all-new
:look.
Having combined its "Nation-
al" and "American" divisions un-
der one governing body this year
by vote of'members of both
boards, the league boasts several
new attractions for the coming
season, among them an official
opening-day celebration and a
parade involving all the teams
plus exhibition games featuring
the likes of speed-toss competi-
tions and home-run derbies.
"The boards were a little ap-
prehensive about the move," says
new league president Steve Beltz.
"But they realized that by com-
bining they could accomplish a
lot for the overall good of Little
League Baseball in Mason Coun-
ty.
"After working for more than
two months I think I can speak
for everybody on the board that
this was a very good move."
Beltz, who is flanked by a
pair of vice presidents -- Dawn
Thompson for the National and
Roger Garrick for the American
division- reminds that there's
still much to be done.
For one thing, he says, the
league is looking for managers,
coaches and volunteers as well as
team sponsors and other donors.
"If you are interested in any of
these positions or would like to
sponsor a team or make a dona-
tion," he says, "you are encour-
aged to contact the league at any
of the player registration days or
by calling 426-1494."
Registration will be handled in
three sessions this month, advises
Beltz. The first will be from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at
the PUD in Shelton.
The second and third sessions,
also at the PUD, will be next
.Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and
the following Saturday, January
30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Would-be registrants are re-
minded they'll need to bring offi-
cial birth certificates (except
those who've played the past two
years) plus medical information
(insurance name, ID number and
doctor's name) and proof of resi-
dency (driver's license or ID card).
Registration fee is $35 per
player, with a maximum of $90
per family. Applications for finan-
cial-hardship assistance will be
made available at sign-up.
There will be a $15-per-person
late fee applied to all applications
received after January 30, adds
Beltz. Applications received after
February 27 will be placed on a
reserve list, he adds, and those
players will be placed on teams if
and only if openings come avail-
able.

A rare breather under their
belts, the Climber varsity hoop
boys got ushered back to reality
down south Tuesday night by a
homestanding and sizzling-hot
R.A. Long.
The twice-beaten hosts staked
the 6-4 Climbers' to a six-point
lead at the outset of their cross-
divisional joust but roared back to
take a five-point lead of their own
by the half on a blistering five-
for-five performance from three-
point range during the second
quarter.
The Climbers rallied a couple
times after intermission as senior
veteran James Aries broke out of
a slight scoring slump with an ac-
tive game on both ends of the
floor, but again the hosts turned
to their long-range guns to quell
the uprisings.
AT THE END of the 69-62
affair the scorebook bore mute
testimony. The Lumberjacks had
sizzled to the tune of 7-10 shoot-
ing from beyond the three-point
stripe.
Cashing in most notably was
6-3 senor Nick Hanson, Long's de-
fending league scoring champ.
Seeing his first action after
breaking his wrist earlier in the
year, Hanson hit four of five treys
and finished with a game-high 34
points.
Aries countered with a season-
high 15 points - tying him with
junior Aaron Brown atop the
team list - and added team-lead-
ing honors in the rebounding de-
partment as well, with seven
grabs.
"I thought James had a very
good ballgame," said coach Mark
Jensen. "He was very active, and
he did some good things offensive-
ly."
ON THE HEELS of a rare
breather - Thursday night's de-
ceptively easy 55-43 win over vis-
iting Chehalis - the loss dropped
the Climbers to 2-3 in league and
6-5 overall.
In last week's blowout against
Chehalis the Climbers took care
of the ball exceptionally well -
with just two turnovers the entire
first half- and combined that
with 50-percent shooting to run
away to a 26-8 halftime lead and
never look back.

State-veteran junior Vic Gar-
denhire ascended the throne at
the annual Timberline Wrestling
Tournament last weekend, lead-
ing a five-man Climber assault on
the awards stand.
Joining him there were a
rookie and three veterans. Fresh-
man Bryan Woods took third at
108 pounds. Adam Cochran, a
sophomore, claimed fourth at 122.
Junior Brandon Devaney wound
up fifth at 168. And classmate
Dean Luedtke did the same at
190.
Gardenhire beat Matt Lininger
of team-champ Yelm 9-5 in the
championship finals. Earlier he'd
bumped off two other matmen in
the ten-grappler battle of 135-
pounders. Details on those wins
were not available at press time.
The Climbers likely would
have had a second champ there
Saturday, by the way, but Vic's
fellow state-meet veteran, junior
190-pound Nick Cronquist, was
otherwise occupied and did not
make the tournament.
Shelton wound up eighth over-
all in the ten-school affair. Yelm
edged Auburn-Riverside for first
place, and then came Timberline,
Clover Park, Tumwater, Auburn,
Lakes, Shelton, River Ridge and
North Thurston.

improved to 7-5 (2-4 league) via
a 61-35 cakewalk over R.A. Long
here Tuesday as junior guard Liz

career-high 13 assists.
"And it's probably a Climber
record, too," said fourth-year head
coach Perry Winkle, admitting
his own records don't go back far
enough to say for sure at this
time.
In any event, the flashy 5-9
junior with the classic spell-check
nomenclature (pronounced "dee
wall mall ah fight") didn't merely
dish it out Tuesday night. She
also hit three of five three-point-
ers and led all scorers with 14
points, shared the rebounding
lead with seven grabs and was
second on the team in the steals
column, with four.
Friday, though, it was one of
Liz' long-time club-ball cohorts
who grabbed the spotlight - soph-
omore guard Stephanie Davis.
Stephanie was afire against
the host Bearcats, draining a
team-high 18 points to lead a
comeback that saw the Climbers
outscore their hosts 17-8 down
the stretch to seize a six-point
win.

A rare breather under their
belts, the Climber varsity hoop
boys got ushered back to reality
down south Tuesday night by a
homestanding and sizzling-hot
R.A. Long.
The twice-beaten hosts staked
the 6-4 Climbers' to a six-point
lead at the outset of their cross-
divisional joust but roared back to
take a five-point lead of their own
by the half on a blistering five-
for-five performance from three-
point range during the second
quarter.
The Climbers rallied a couple
times after intermission as senior
veteran James Aries broke out of
a slight scoring slump with an ac-
tive game on both ends of the
floor, but again the hosts turned
to their long-range guns to quell
the uprisings.
AT THE END of the 69-62
affair the scorebook bore mute
testimony. The Lumberjacks had
sizzled to the tune of 7-10 shoot-
ing from beyond the three-point
stripe.
Cashing in most notably was
6-3 senor Nick Hanson, Long's de-
fending league scoring champ.
Seeing his first action after
breaking his wrist earlier in the
year, Hanson hit four of five treys
and finished with a game-high 34
points.
Aries countered with a season-
high 15 points - tying him with
junior Aaron Brown atop the
team list - and added team-lead-
ing honors in the rebounding de-
partment as well, with seven
grabs.
"I thought James had a very
good ballgame," said coach Mark
Jensen. "He was very active, and
he did some good things offensive-
ly."
ON THE HEELS of a rare
breather - Thursday night's de-
ceptively easy 55-43 win over vis-
iting Chehalis - the loss dropped
the Climbers to 2-3 in league and
6-5 overall.
In last week's blowout against
Chehalis the Climbers took care
of the ball exceptionally well -
with just two turnovers the entire
first half- and combined that
with 50-percent shooting to run
away to a 26-8 halftime lead and
never look back.
Brown hit four of seven from
three-point range and finished

State-veteran junior Vic Gar-
denhire ascended the throne at
the annual Timberline Wrestling
Tournament last weekend, lead-
ing a five-man Climber assault on
the awards stand.
Joining him there were a
rookie and three veterans. Fresh-
man Bryan Woods took third at
108 pounds. Adam Cochran, a
sophomore, claimed fourth at 122.
Junior Brandon Devaney wound
up fifth at 168. And classmate
Dean Luedtke did the same at
190.
Gardenhire beat Matt Lininger
of team-champ Yelm 9-5 in the
championship finals. Earlier he'd
bumped off two other matmen in
the ten-grappler battle of 135-
pounders. Details on those wins
were not available at press time.
The Climbers likely would
have had a second champ there
Saturday, by the way, but Vic's
fellow state-meet veteran, junior
190-pound Nick Cronquist, was
otherwise occupied and did not
make the tournament.
Shelton wound up eighth over-
all in the ten-school affair. Yelm
edged Auburn-Riverside for first
place, and then came Timberline,
Clover Park, Tumwater, Auburn,
Lakes, Shelton, River Ridge and
North Thurston.

roared from behind to beat Che-
halls on the road Friday and then
improved to 7-5 (2-4 league) via
a 61-35 cakewalk over R.A. Long
here Tuesday as junior guard Liz
de Waal Malefyt dished off a
career-high 13 assists.
"And it's probably a Climber
record, too," said fourth-year head
coach Perry Winkle, admitting
his own records don't go back far
enough to say for sure at this
time.
In any event, the flashy 5-9
junior with the classic spell-check
nomenclature (pronounced "dee
wall mall ah fight") didn't merely
dish it out Tuesday night. She
also hit three of five three-point-
ers and led all scorers with 14
points, shared the rebounding
lead with seven grabs and was
second on the team in the steals
column, with four.
Friday, though, it was one of
Liz' long-time club-ball cohorts
who grabbed the spotlight - soph-
omore guard Stephanie Davis.
Stephanie was afire against
the host Bearcats, draining a
team-high 18 points to lead a
comeback that saw the Climbers
outscore their hosts 17-8 down
the stretch to seize a six-point
win.
