One of best in nation's history
ditor, The Journal: terrorist attacks despite all of economic growth in 20 years.
It is awfully easy to sit back
and look at situations which

guess what would haw been the
b-st way to resolve problems if

so much negative commentary

taiaing camps, (3) eliminated
tec'thirds of the al-Qaida lead-
errship, (4) established a democ-

the bloodthirsty terrorists for
over five years, (7) liberated over
50 million oppressed people, (8)
took an evil dictator, Saddam,
his evil sons, and Zarquawi out
of power, (9) closed down torture
chambers and en/brced United
Nations resolutions resulting in
Libya giving up its weapons of

shown his colorblindness by giv-
ing high positions to people of
all races. All this despite being
handed an economy in a down-
ward spiral.
Regardless of two wars, the
Enron scandals and five major
hurricanes, he managed to give
us a quarter showing the most
There have been tbur new re-
cords in the stock market,
thanks to his tax cuts. Home
ownership is at an all-time high,
unemployment is at historic
lows, 6.6 million jobs have been
created, and now gas prices are
falling daily.
He whipped John Kerry even
though Kerry had the media,
Hollywood, Soros and Michael
Moore on his side. Iraq has been
given its sovereignty and has
had several successthl elections
with the people turning out to
support this in droves.
What more could anyone pos-
sibly expect from a President in
six years? Yes, he like everyone
else has some shortcomings, but
even so he should go down in
history as one of the best Presi-
dents in our nation's history.

on posters displayed around the
meeting room. The residents in at-
tendance, possibly a good sample
of the population, came with no,
some or even disjointed familiarity
with the Growth Management Act
of 1990. Although contained in the
handouts, the purposeful intents
and goals of the GMA were lost
to the attendees fearful of govern-
ment.
In fact, our commissioners and
staffwere acting to meet state man-
dates, county allocation of growth
and the pressure of approaching
deadlines when the city could lose
valuable state funds. Surely, their
mission was to implement the
GMA, a thoughtful law enacted
with some 14 laudable purposes
to ensure the orderly, comprehen-
sive and long-term management
of population growth, projected
statewide to be 500,000 every 10
years, and a ghastly 10,500 in
Shelton and its UGAs in the com-
ing decade.
Further, Washington made
into law the GMA to preserve
and enhance the people's quality
of life amidst rampant growth by
providing for public facilities and
services such as water, sanitation,
transportation, recreation and
protecting the much too precious
environment. Best of all, the ex-
pressed goals of the GMA (and un-
doubtedly of our city commission-
ers) included protection of people's
property rights and improvements
in the processing of building per-
mits. How bad can that be?
Commendably, in their study
session on January 22, Shelton
commissioners emphatically con-
firmed this need to provide resi-
dents with GMA information vital
to understanding the UGAs. At
the ready, city staff promptly re-
sponded with proposals for an in-
formation and media campaign to
address this need.
In this public education drive,
the city has another excellent op-
portunity for transparency. It
might disclose the list of public
works projects and the state fund-
ing dollars at stake with the April
deadline. This list would be a per-
suasive piece of information to the
public being served, essential yet
overlooked in the recent plea for
public support for adoption of the
plan.
