SPORTS JOURNAL THE OCCASIONAL SIBLING distraction notwithstanding, composite- leather air bladders prove the center of attention as usual last Saturday during another of the ongoing episodes of Shelton Rec Basketball in the Minidome. The sport's young ladies go at it every Saturday as well, though theirs is the junior-high domicile. Wanna play kids' baseball? lvlSiga'up sessions for the ason County Youth Base hall ASsoc" • °^t . lation have been ahed_llled for three days in ary. l,T o be held at the Timber- =tact Library in Shelton the Sessions are set for Satur'da le Y, bru 3 ary , from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesday, February 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Sun- day, February 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. Prospective players unable to attend one of the registra- tion sessions are asked to go to the association's Web site at http://mcyba.baberuthnet- work.corn, get registration forms there and mail them to P.O. As girls' skid continues Boys shake Yelm in triple overtime It took 'em fully three overtimes to do it, but the boys of Climber hoopdom finally shook off pesky underdog Yelm here Tuesday in Western Cascade Conference ac- tion, prevailing 74-70. Six-four senior all-leaguer Cur- tis Trondsen led the way with a season-high 36 points and eight rebounds. The standout forward shot 12-18 from two-point range, 3-6 from beyond the arc and 3-4 at the free-throw line. "He had a big night," says head coach Mark Jensen, noting that the Climbers' leader is among the top two or three scorers in the en- tire league. "You know, people are gettin' more physical with him and try- in' t' take him outta games. And I thought last night he maybe showed some things that he has adjusted to. I mean, he stepped outside; he hit a couple outside. He hit some midrange stuff. And he scored inside. So he scored at all different levels." ALSO PIVOTAL against Yelm, says Jensen, were notable contri- butions off the bench. "A couple of the young kids came in and did a really nice job," says the veteran mentor. "Cuz we were down ten in the fourth quarter. And (sophomore forward) Trevor Peterson did a really nice job, and I thought (classmate guard) Levi Sutton did a nice job of running and gettin' us up and down the floor. "Trevor had nine points and got a couple big steals for us and a big put-back. So, I mean, it was nice, cuz it was sort of a team deal. We got some positive things out of a lot of different kids." Coupled with a victory over for- mer Climber Mel Ninnis and his Clover Park boys last weekend following a narrow loss to young- Owl cagers still on track The hoop Owls of Mary M. Knight played to mixed reviews the past week but remained on track for the playoffs all the same. The girls bowed 47-51 to Lake Quinault and 56-62 to Taholah to fall to 8-5 overall and 5-5 in league. The boys, meanwhile, beat Quinault 49-46 before losing 55-59 to Taholah. They stood at 9-4 over- all and 8-3 in league. GIRLS Lake QulnauIt 9 24 34 51 Mary M. THEIR GIRL counterparts, meanwhile, saw their records fall to 5-8 and 2-4, respectively, as ju- nior all-league guard Brynna Full- er aggravated her ankle problems and teams continued to take ad- vantage of the Climbers' relative lack of height. They bowed 44-62 to Yelm, 39- 54 to North Thurston and 45-56 to Central Kitsap. "We're getting outrebounded; that's killing us," says Climber coach John Wallwork. "And we're turnin' the ball over just a little too much at critical moments. And then we're not shootin' the ball the way we can." MENTAL TOUGHNESS is what it all comes down to, reminds Coach. And the girls are working on that - though it's true that they don't appear to be having a whole lot of fun doing so. "You know, basketball is a tough thing," says Coach. "When things aren't goin' your way - you're not shootin' the ball well, you're not finishin' or you're turnin' the ball over - it's tough to have fun. You know? It's like 'What came first? The chicken or the egg?' "Do you have fun first and start playing well, or do you play well and then the fun comes?" As for the boys' triple-over- time nailbiter Tuesday, it's the most extended varsity game he's been a part of here, says Jensen, whose Climber career spans three decades. "We did one a number of years ago that was jayvee," he says. He grins. "But we lost that one, so this one was better."
