said he was responding to a report
around 6:30 a.m. from Eduardo
Perez who said someone stole his
1994 Chevy van after his wife left
it running outside their residence
at 624 West Cedar Street.
Rhoades said he spotted the
van in the 1500 block of Franklin
Street, and when he turned and
followed it, the speed increased
and was in excess of the posted
25 miles per hour. When the van
attempted to enter the roadway,
it struck a tree on the passenger

• Christopher Eugene
Thompson, 35,, of 1808 West
Ford Loop Road, Elma, was iden-
tified in an investigation of un-
lawful possession of a firearm in
the second degree, possession of
methamphetamine, unlawful pos-
session of a precription drug and
use of drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested just after mid-
night on January 23 by Trooper
Joshua Merritt of the Washington
*State Patrol who said he stopped
the vehicle Thompson was driv-
ing for speeding and having a
cracked windshield. The trooper
noted Thompson "showed signs
of confusion and had lethargic
movements and a gravely slurred
voice." He also saw several knives
and a box of ammunition inside
the vehicle.
Merritt said he searched
Thompson and found a glass pipe
in a shirt pocket and a baggie
containing a white crystal sub-
stance which field-tested posi-
tive for methamphetamine. When
he searched the vehicle, he said,
he found a pill bottle which con-
tained several pills identified as
Vicodin, a prescription narcotic
and a .22-caliber rifle. Thompson
lost his right to own, use or pos-
sess firearms as a result of a 2001
felony drug conviction.
Court Commissioner Adamson
appointed Eric Valley as defense
counsel, set bail at $10,000 and
scheduled arraignment for Feb-
ruary 5.
• Nathan Allen Hanson, 25,
of 6418 Pullman Place SW, Port
Orchard, was identified in an in-
vestigation of unlawful posses-
sion of a prescription drug, pos-
session of less than 40 grams of
marijuana and use of drug para-
phernalia.
He was arrested January 22
by Trooper Tony Radulescu who
works out of Kitsap County on the
Aggressive Driving Apprehension

hicle Hanson was driving for hav-
ing no lights on the rear license
plate and when he contacted
Hanson, the trooper noted, he he
detected an odor of marijuana and
arrested him after verifying there
was a warrant for his arrest.
The trooper said he searched
Hanson and found a bag of green
vegetable material which field-

• Simeon Marc Buchheit,
21, of 691 East Greenview Lane,
Shelton, was identified in an in-
vestigation of attempted residen-
tial burglary, theft in the second
degree and vehicle prowl in the
second degree.
He was arrested on January 19
by Deputy Jim Morini of the Ma-
son County Sheriffs Office who
said he was responding to a re-
port from Danielle Warren of an
attempted break-in at a residence
on 531 East Meyer Lake Drive.
Warren reportedly said someone
tried to get inside and left in a red
vehicle.
The deputy said that as he
turned on to the road a red ve-
hicle stopped about 50 yards in
front of his patrol car and a male
jumped out and ran through some
backyards in Oak Park. Morini
said he was not located but Buch-
heit, who was the driver, placed
his hands on the vehicle.
Danielle Warren said two men
knocked on the front door but she
ignored them. Then she said she
heard someone trying windows
and doors of the residence. She
also said she watched them get
into her father's vehicle, take two
speakers and then drive off.
After being advised of his con-
stitutional rights not to speak
with law enforcement without
an attorney present, Buchheit
allegedly said he went to collect
$140 he loaned Danielle Warren
and when she did not come to the
door he took the speakers as col-
lateral.
Judge Sawyer appointed Gazo-
ri as defense attorney, set bail at
$5,000 and scheduled arraign-
ment for February 5.

of 40560 North Highway 101, Lil-
liwaup, was identified in an inves-
tigation of auto theft, assault in

der the influence of intoxicants.
He was arrested January 19 by
Trooper Toby Haapala who said
he was responding to a report of
a disabled vehicle near Milepost
315 of Highway 101. Monty and
Marlene Davis of Sequim report-
edly stopped to help a Ford Es-
cort in the road and found Mor-
ris slumped over the wheel. Mr.
Davis reportedly tried to push the
Escort and Mrs. Davis called 911.
Morris reportedly got into the
Davises' 2002 Dodge Ram and
put it in gear. When Mrs. Davis
reached into the vehicle to turn it
off he pushed her away leaving a
mark on her arm. Mr. Davis re-
portedly pulled Morris from the
vehicle and said Morris struck
him in the head with his hands
before firefighters arrived and re-
strained Morris.
Davis was aided by two other
motorists, Angelo Fazio and Bruce
Ganon. The results of a portable
breath test performed on Morris
reportedly indicated a blood-alco-
hol level of .158, nearly twice the
legal limit.
Judge Sawyer appointed John
Stanislay as defense attorney,
set bail at $5,000 and scheduled
arraignment for February 5. He
ordered Morris to have no contact
with the Davises or potential wit-
nesses, Fazio and Ganon.

Belfair, was identified in an in-
vestigation of malicious mischief
in the second degree and fourth-

He was arrested January 21
by Deputy Byron Trout who said
he was putting gas in his patrol
vehicle when he was approached
by Bryndon S. Neary who had a
bloody nose and said someone
had hit him at Belfair State Park.
Neary said "a black guy and some
kids started hassling him and
then the black guy punched the
car window, broke it and then hit
him in the nose for no reason."
The incident was reported at
about 6 p.m. and Trout said he
looked for the suspect "with no
luck." At 9:15 p.m., the deputy
said, he saw three people walking
along NE Gladwin Beach Road,
just north of the park. One per-
son was described as a black male
who matched the description giv-
en by Neary and there were two
juvenile females with him. McGee
allegedly told the deputy "some
dude" made lewd advances to "my
girls here so I stood up for them
and punched the dude."
Judge Sawyer appointed Jea-
nette Boothe as defense attorney,
set bail at $2,500 and scheduled
arraignment for February 5. He
ordered McGee to have no contact
with Neary.
• David Jay Patrick, 22, of
121 NE Rainbow Lane, Belfair,
was identified in an investigation
of possession of a drug without a
prescription and driving under
the influence.
He was arrested on January
19 by Trooper Ken Hedstrom who
said he stopped the vehicle Pat-
rick was driving for speeding on
State Route 3 in Belfair. Patrick
was stumbling and falling as he
exited the vehicle, the trooper re-
ported, noting he placed Patrick
under arrest for driving under the
influence.
The trooper said he searched
Patrick and found an unmarked
pill bottle in one of his pockets
which contained Vicodin, a pre-
scription drug. A gun also was
found under the driver's seat, the
trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed An-
drew Rubenstein as defense attor-
ney, set bail at $5,000 and sched-
uled arraignment for February 5.
• Corey Laughard, 25, of
Port Orchard, was identified in
an investigation of felony eluding
and driving with a suspended li-
cense. He was listed as transient
at booking.
Laughard was arrested January
21 by Trooper C.R. Mihelich who
said he saw the vehicle Laughard
was driving parked on the shoul-
der near a self-storage business
at the intersection of state routes
3 and 106. The vehicle Laughard
was driving reportedly left at a
high rate of speed, 56 miles per
hour, and took off north on State
Route 3, driving above the posted
speed of 35 miles per hour. The
vehicle lost a tire and Laughard
was arrested, the trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed Val-
ley as defense attorney, set bail
at $5,000 and scheduled arraign-
ment for February 5.
• Cheryl Ann Chaplin,
47, of 931 SE Cook Plant Farm
Road, Shelton, was identified in
an investigation of possession of
methamphetamine, use of drug
paraphernalia and driving with
a suspended license in the third
degree.
She was arrested around 2
a.m. January 22 by Sergeant Jeff
Rhoades of the SPD who said
he confirmed her driving status
was suspended. Rhoades said he
searched the vehicle and found
a purse which contained a small
makeup bag that had a small bag
with a white substance which
field-tested positive for meth.
He also reported finding a glass
smoking device behind the purse
on the seat.
Judge Sawyer appointed Gazori
as defense attorney and released
Chaplin on her promise to appear
for arraignment on February 5.
On Friday, January 19:
• Joel Christopher Weigle,
30, of 1882 Boundary Street,
Shelton, was identified in an in-
vestigation of possession of meth-
amphetamine, possession of less
than 40 grams of marijuana and
driving under the influence of in-
toxicants.
He was arrested January 18 by
Trooper C.F. Magallon who said
he observed a dark-colored Su-
zuki sport-utility vehicle driving
erratically in the Hillcrest area
of Shelton. The vehicle report-
edly failed to stop for several stop
signs in the area and accelerated
away from the patrol car. Magal-
lon said when the vehicle finally
stopped at the Chevron station
at Arcadia and Olympic High-
way South, the driver, Weigle,
appeared "extremely restless and
jittery and he was making short,
rapid exaggerated motions about
the vehicle."
The trooper reported Weigle's
behavior to be "consistent with
someone under the influence of
stimulants" and noted he per-
formed poorly on voluntary field
sobriety tests. Magallon said he
searched a black leather jacket
Weigle was wearing and found
a cigarette package which con-
tained a plastic bag of a green
vegetable material and a smaller
bag which containing small white
crystals. Field tests on both sub-
stances were positive for meth-
amphetamine and marijuana, the
trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed Sergi
as defense attorney, set bail at
$2,500 and scheduled arraign-
ment for February 1.
On Thursday, January 18:
• John Arthur Marshall-
Dhuet, 21, of 1520 Old Belfair
Highway, Belfair, was identified
in an investigation of possession
of methamphetamine, possession
of less than 40 grams of marijua-
na and use of drug parapherna-
lia.
He was arrested January 17
by Trooper Rob Atkinson who
said he stopped the vehicle Mar-
shall-Dhuet was driving because
his passenger was not wearing a
seatbelt and the windshield had a
number of cracks. After the troop-
er determined the driver's driving
status was suspended and there
was an outstanding Shelton Mu-
nicipal Court warrant for his ar-
rest, he arrested the suspect.
The trooper said he searched
the vehicle and found inside a
pipe with burnt residue and a
case containing a baggie with
white residue, assorted para-
phernalia and a glass tube with
white residue. A metal case con-
taining suspected marijuana was
also found in the vehicle. The res-
idue from the pipe and glass tube
field-tested positive for meth and
the vegetable material in the case
was positive for marijuana, the
trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed
Charles Lane as defense attorney,
set bail at $5,000 and scheduled
arraignment for January 29.
Guilty pleas:
Batchelor took his
customer for a ride
Two men scheduled for trial this
month in Mason County Superior
Court changed their pleas on Mon-
day, January 22.
Daniel Ray Batchelor, 38, of
2236 King Street, Shelton, pled
guilty to identity theft in the sec-
ond degree.
"October 27 I used a credit card
of one of my customers with the in-
tent to commit a crime," Batchelor
wrote in his plea statement. "I was
a limousine driver," he added, and
said the card belonged to Darrell
Winans.
"Where did you obtain that in-
formation?" Judge James Sawyer
asked. "It was on the trip sheet,"
Batchelor replied.
According to court documents,
he obtained the credit card num-
ber when he was working as a
driver for a local limousine service
and had transported Winans' wife.
The standard-range sentence is
from 12 to 14 months, Judge Saw-
yer explained.
Anthony Vincent Newbern,
18, of 110 East Maple Street, Shel-
ton, entered guilty pleas to charg-
es of burglary in the second degree
and second-degree theft.
In his plea statement, Newbern
wrote, "On November 5, I unlaw-
fully entered the Arcadia Drill-
ing building on Collier Road and
stole copper wire." Newbern was
employed by Arcadia Drilling at
the time of the theft and the value
of the copper was said to be more
than $250.
With an offender score of two the
sentencing range is from four to 12
months for the burglary conviction,
Judge Sawyer explained, with the
state recommending a nine-month
sentence for the burglary.
Batchelor and Newbern are
scheduled for sentencing on Feb-
ruary 12.

liwaup, was identified in an inves-
tigation of auto theft, assault in
the fourth degree and driving un-
der the influence of intoxicants.
He was arrested January 19 by
Trooper Toby Haapala who said
he was responding to a report of
a disabled vehicle near Milepost
315 of Highway 101. Monty and
Marlene Davis of Sequim report-
edly stopped to help a Ford Es-
cort in the road and found Mor-
ris slumped over the wheel. Mr.
Davis reportedly tried to push the
Escort and Mrs. Davis called 911.
Morris reportedly got into the
Davises' 2002 Dodge Ram and
put it in gear. When Mrs. Davis
reached into the vehicle to turn it
off he pushed her away leaving a
mark on her arm. Mr. Davis re-
portedly pulled Morris from the
vehicle and said Morris struck
him in the head with his hands
before firefighters arrived and re-
strained Morris.
Davis was aided by two other
motorists, Angelo Fazio and Bruce
Ganon. The results of a portable
breath test performed on Morris
reportedly indicated a blood-alco-
hol level of .158, nearly twice the
legal limit.
Judge Sawyer appointed John
Stanislay as defense attorney,
set bail at $5,000 and scheduled
arraignment for February 5. He
ordered Morris to have no contact
with the Davises or potential wit-
nesses, Fazio and Ganon.
• Egbert Wayne McGee Jr.,
19, of 23110 NE State Route 3,
Belfair, was identified in an in-
vestigation of malicious mischief
in the second degree and fourth-
degree assault.
He was arrested January 21
by Deputy Byron Trout who said
he was putting gas in his patrol
vehicle when he was approached
by Bryndon S. Neary who had a
bloody nose and said someone
had hit him at Belfair State Park.
Neary said "a black guy and some
kids started hassling him and
then the black guy punched the
car window, broke it and then hit
him in the nose for no reason."
The incident was reported at
about 6 p.m. and Trout said he
looked for the suspect "with no
luck." At 9:15 p.m., the deputy
said, he saw three people walking
along NE Gladwin Beach Road,
just north of the park. One per-
son was described as a black male
who matched the description giv-
en by Neary and there were two
juvenile females with him. McGee
allegedly told the deputy "some
dude" made lewd advances to "my
girls here so I stood up for them
and punched the dude."
Judge Sawyer appointed Jea-
nette Boothe as defense attorney,
set bail at $2,500 and scheduled
arraignment for February 5. He
ordered McGee to have no contact
with Neary.
• David Jay Patrick, 22, of
121 NE Rainbow Lane, Belfair,
was identified in an investigation
of possession of a drug without a
prescription and driving under
the influence.
He was arrested on January
19 by Trooper Ken Hedstrom who
said he stopped the vehicle Pat-
rick was driving for speeding on
State Route 3 in Belfair. Patrick
was stumbling and falling as he
exited the vehicle, the trooper re-
ported, noting he placed Patrick
under arrest for driving under the
influence.
The trooper said he searched
Patrick and found an unmarked
pill bottle in one of his pockets
which contained Vicodin, a pre-
scription drug. A gun also was
found under the driver's seat, the
trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed An-
drew Rubenstein as defense attor-
ney, set bail at $5,000 and sched-
uled arraignment for February 5.
• Corey Laughard, 25, of
Port Orchard, was identified in
an investigation of felony eluding
and driving with a suspended li-
cense. He was listed as transient
at booking.
Laughard was arrested January
21 by Trooper C.R. Mihelich who
said he saw the vehicle Laughard
was driving parked on the shoul-
der near a self-storage business
at the intersection of state routes
3 and 106. The vehicle Laughard
was driving reportedly left at a
high rate of speed, 56 miles per
hour, and took off north on State
Route 3, driving above the posted
speed of 35 miles per hour. The
vehicle lost a tire and Laughard
was arrested, the trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed Val-
ley as defense attorney, set bail
at $5,000 and scheduled arraign-
ment for February 5.
• Cheryl Ann Chaplin,
47, of 931 SE Cook Plant Farm
Road, Shelton, was identified in
an investigation of possession of
methamphetamine, use of drug
paraphernalia and driving with
a suspended license in the third
degree.
She was arrested around 2
a.m. January 22 by Sergeant Jeff
Rhoades of the SPD who said
he confirmed her driving status
was suspended. Rhoades said he
searched the vehicle and found
a purse which contained a small
makeup bag that had a small bag
with a white substance which
field-tested positive for meth.
He also reported finding a glass
smoking device behind the purse
on the seat.
Judge Sawyer appointed Gazori
as defense attorney and released
Chaplin on her promise to appear
for arraignment on February 5.
On Friday, January 19:
• Joel Christopher Weigle,
30, of 1882 Boundary Street,
Shelton, was identified in an in-
vestigation of possession of meth-
amphetamine, possession of less
than 40 grams of marijuana and
driving under the influence of in-
toxicants.
He was arrested January 18 by
Trooper C.F. Magallon who said
he observed a dark-colored Su-
zuki sport-utility vehicle driving
erratically in the Hillcrest area
of Shelton. The vehicle report-
edly failed to stop for several stop
signs in the area and accelerated
away from the patrol car. Magal-
lon said when the vehicle finally
stopped at the Chevron station
at Arcadia and Olympic High-
way South, the driver, Weigle,
appeared "extremely restless and
jittery and he was making short,
rapid exaggerated motions about
the vehicle."
The trooper reported Weigle's
behavior to be "consistent with
someone under the influence of
stimulants" and noted he per-
formed poorly on voluntary field
sobriety tests. Magallon said he
searched a black leather jacket
Weigle was wearing and found
a cigarette package which con-
tained a plastic bag of a green
vegetable material and a smaller
bag which containing small white
crystals. Field tests on both sub-
stances were positive for meth-
amphetamine and marijuana, the
trooper said.

Highway, Belfair, was identified
in an investigation of possession
of methamphetamine, possession
of less than 40 grams of marijua-
na and use of drug parapherna-
lia.
He was arrested January 17
by Trooper Rob Atkinson who
said he stopped the vehicle Mar-
shall-Dhuet was driving because
his passenger was not wearing a
seatbelt and the windshield had a
number of cracks. After the troop-
er determined the driver's driving
status was suspended and there
was an outstanding Shelton Mu-
nicipal Court warrant for his ar-
rest, he arrested the suspect.
The trooper said he searched
the vehicle and found inside a
pipe with burnt residue and a
case containing a baggie with
white residue, assorted para-
phernalia and a glass tube with
white residue. A metal case con-
taining suspected marijuana was
also found in the vehicle. The res-
idue from the pipe and glass tube
field-tested positive for meth and
the vegetable material in the case
was positive for marijuana, the
trooper said.
Judge Sawyer appointed
Charles Lane as defense attorney,
set bail at $5,000 and scheduled
arraignment for January 29.
Guilty pleas:
Batchelor took his
customer for a ride
Two men scheduled for trial this
month in Mason County Superior
Court changed their pleas on Mon-
day, January 22.
Daniel Ray Batchelor, 38, of
2236 King Street, Shelton, pled
guilty to identity theft in the sec-
ond degree.
"October 27 I used a credit card
of one of my customers with the in-
tent to commit a crime," Batchelor
wrote in his plea statement. "I was
a limousine driver," he added, and
said the card belonged to Darrell
Winans.
"Where did you obtain that in-
formation?" Judge James Sawyer
asked. "It was on the trip sheet,"
Batchelor replied.
According to court documents,
he obtained the credit card num-
ber when he was working as a
driver for a local limousine service
and had transported Winans' wife.
The standard-range sentence is
from 12 to 14 months, Judge Saw-
yer explained.
Anthony Vincent Newbern,
18, of 110 East Maple Street, Shel-
ton, entered guilty pleas to charg-
es of burglary in the second degree
and second-degree theft.
In his plea statement, Newbern
wrote, "On November 5, I unlaw-
fully entered the Arcadia Drill-
ing building on Collier Road and
stole copper wire." Newbern was
employed by Arcadia Drilling at
the time of the theft and the value
of the copper was said to be more
than $250.
With an offender score of two the
sentencing range is from four to 12
months for the burglary conviction,
Judge Sawyer explained, with the
state recommending a nine-month
sentence for the burglary.
Batchelor and Newbern are
scheduled for sentencing on Feb-
ruary 12.
