Falling tree limbs

power outages on
Harstine Island,

throughout the county
for much of last week.

"The last time I remember something
significant like this is December 1996 and
January 1997," he said.
However, Best said the county's notori-
ous 2007 storm was much harder on coun-
ty roads than this one.
"We had the snow then the rapid rain
then the flooding and the landslides - it
was a mess," he said. "So far we're doing
pretty good."
Mason County urged residents to stay
at home during the morning of Wednes-
day, Jan. 18, as crews struggled to deal
with the snow with the county's 14 snow-
plows. Many of these, said Director of
Public Works Charlie Butros, are not ac-
tual snowplow vehicles, but plow attach-
ments that fit on large pieces of machin-
ery or large trucks.
Local school districts closed for the
snow, giving children a full week off.
The Shelton and North Mason School
Districts were closed all week Tuesday,
Jan. 17, through Friday, Jan. 20, and
Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday,
Jan. 16.
Mason County fire and EMS crews re-
sponded to 158 calls on Thursday, Jan.
19. Of those 158 total calls, 96 were for
general service. On Jan. 20, fire crews re-
sponded to 105 total calls. In contrast, on
Sunday, Jan. 22, there were only 26 total
fire district calls in the county.
On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Mason County
PUD 3 responded to several outages.
The first was reported at 11 a.m. and
involved a fallen tree, which damaged a
power line when it fell across U.S. High-
way 3 at Deer Creek, affecting about 140
PUD 3 customers. County and PUD 3
crews cleared the road and repaired the
damage throughout Wednesday.
At about 4:30 p.m., a tree fell across
power lines at the corner of Pickering
Road and Schneider Road, causing an out-
age.
PUD 3 crews also worked to restore
power to areas on Turner Avenue and An-
gleside Road in Shelton, Sherwood Hills
near Allyn, Torten Shores, southeast of
Shelton, and removed a tree limb on a
power line on Walker Park Road.
The crews also addressed an outage
in parts of Hurley Waldrip Road and Old
Olympic Highway due to a downed tree
across a power line.
The heavy snowfall quit that after:
noon, but an ice storm continued to do
damage to the county on Thursday, Jan.
19, when the area was subjected to freez-
ing rain.
More than 4,000 PUD 3 customers were
• affected by outages during Thursday's ice
storm.
A fallen tree on power lines in Lake
Limerick took out power for 650 custom-
ers. Other outages were reported on Ar-
cadia Shores, Fish Hatchery Road, Ka-
milche Point, Lynch Road, Maples Road
on Harstine Island, Old Arcadia Road,
Old Olympic Highway and Turner and
Angleside Streets in Shelton.
By that afternoon, the total rose to
more than 3,600 total customers without
power, mostly those served by the Collins
Lake substation on the Tahuya Peninsu-
la, which serves 2,900 customers.
The substation lost power at 1:20 p.m.
on Thursday, affecting the Belfair Tahuya
Road, Tahuya River Valley, Collins Lake,
Dewatto, Tahuya, Hohobas Camp area,
North Shore Road to Burma Road, Tee
Lake and Maggie Lake.
Power was restored to these customers
within an hour, according to PUD 3.
Friday brought still more outages.
Harstine Island lost power for much of
the day. Other areas without power in-
cluded Arcadia Shores, Brewer Road,
Shorecrest, Timberlakes, Pickering
Road, Kamilche Point, Bloomfield Road,
North Shore Road, Stretch Island, Hurd
Road (Belfair View Estates), Tiger-Mis-
sion Lake, Thomas Road (Grapeview),
Mueller Road, Cougar Smith Road and
Kelly Road.
Crews from Mason County PUD 1
helped restore outages to PUD 3 services
areas. Crews from Okanogan County PUD
and Douglas County PUD in north central
Washington also worked to restore power
in Mason County.
Isolated outages were also being ad-
dressed over last weekend.
