"Most jurisdictions are,"
he said. "The benefit to the
pavement is a big thing for
US."
Camera-like devices can
also be seen on many traf-
fic signals in Shelton, but
many of them are part of
an Opticon system, which
detects flashing police, fire
and aid unit lights, giving
such vehicles a clear lane of
travel in an emergency situ-
ation.
So don't worry about be-
ing caught on candid cam-
era on Wallace Kneeland,
and expect more signal cam-
eras to come in the future.

District officials say that the
replacement levy rates are pro-
jected to be less than current
ones and that the district will be
eligible to receive about $7 mil-
lion in matching funds.
The projected rate for 2012 is
$3.15 per $1,000 of assessed val-
uation and will raise $6,570,000.
In 2013, the rate would be about
$3.20 and raise $6,786,000 and
in 2014 the projected rate is
$3.27 and raise $7,030,000.
By way of comparison, the
estimated rate for the levy that
expires at the end of this year
is $3.37 per $1,000 of assessed
valuation.
Lastly, a Southside School
District levy will help finance
the cost of the district's non-high
payment, administrative costs
and maintenance and operation.
If approved, the levy rate (per
$1,000 of assessed valuation)
would be $2.16 in 2012i $2.30 in
2013 and $2.40 in 2014.
EMS
Fire districts 3 and 9, mean-
while, are also both running reg-
ular property levies for EMS.
In the Grapeview area, Fire
District 3 is proposing a six-
year levy at a rate of 18 cents per
$1,000 of assessed valuation.
Fire District 9, meanwhile, is
seeking a six year EMS levy at
a rate of 50 cents per $1,000 of
assessed valuation.
Light

very dark, officers monitored the
area frequently.
'That light will remain off," Dav-
enport said.
Davenport asked the commission
to approve the start of phase two of
the project, which would darken 36
streetlights south of Cota Street to the
Shelton city limits. The cost savings for
the city for this phase is not yet known
because all of the lights do not use the
same amount of electricity.
The city plans to start phase
three, which eliminates 24 street-
lights from Wallace Kneeland Blvd
north to the city limits sometime in
the second quarter of next year.
City administrator Dave O~Leary
commented on the project, and also
said that the project would make
the city's use of electricity much
more efficient.
"If there is existing lighting that
makes that light redundant.., if we
leave them on we're just burning en-
ergy," he said.
Mayor John Tarrant was hesi-
tant to approve the commencement
of phase two of the project, and said
that he was still concerned about
the impacts of the project on public
safety, despite Davenport's assur-
ances that safety would not be nega-
tively impacted.
"I didn't vote for this before," Tar-
rant said.
To address Tarrant's concerns,
and to give the public another
chance to give their input, the com-
mission agreed to have another
two-week public comment period on
phase two of the project.
