Child-luring case closed By KEVAN MOORE Police have closed a child-lur- ing investigation following several tips from the public and investiga- tors say they think it was simply a case of an elderly man trying to do good deeds in the community. "Thanks to observant concerned citizens, three different calls were made to the Mason County Sher- iffs Office providing a vehicle license plate number and a com- plete description of a man who was driving around Mason Coun- ty, providing minor children with rides as well as giving out dollar bills to minors," said Chief Deputy Dean Byrd. During the investigation sher- iffs deputies contacted a 72-year- old, longtime Mason County man with no criminal history. The man told investigators he did drive around the county in his black Dodge Ram pickup truck or his black Dodge PT Cruiser, offering rides to anyone, youth or adult, as well as giving children dollar bills. The man also admitted to be- ing in the Matlock area rewarding children for playing nicely, and be- ing in the Grapeview area provid- ing rides to people standing in the rain who looked like they needed a ride. The man stated that it was not his intention to scare the parents of any minors and that he just wanted to follow the Golden Rule of"doing unto others as you would want them to do unto you." The man was admonished for contacting minors without their parents' or guardians' consent and warned him to cease and desist. The results of this investiga- tion, Byrd said, will be forwarded to the Mason County Prosecutor's Office for review. City hopes to solve graffiti problem By KEVAN MOORE The Shelton Police Department and the Shelton Municipal Court Community Service Program are working together to create a pilot Graffiti Abatement Program within the city following a significant in- crease in graffiti vandalism to area busi- nesses, private property and public build- ings Prompt removal of graffiti reduces the chance of reoccurrence and property own- ers who have become victims of graffti may be able to receive labor assistance from the program to clean the graffiti while the sup- plies will be the responsibility of the prop- erty owner. Victims of graffiti should report it the Shelton Police Department and those that are seeking assistance in graffiti abate- ment should call Officer Daniel Patton at 432-5135. If the vandalism is in progress, folks should call 911. Officials said that there are several op- tions to fighting graffiti. Digital game cam- eras with infrared flashes start at under $100. These cameras can be hidden out of sight and document any movement with- in the target zone. Developing the film is as easy as hooking up to your computer, downloading the pictures, and emailing them to the officer assigned to your case. Exposed surfaces can be sprayed or painted with a commercial wax coating such as Graffiti Off and Graffiti Melt. If the surface is tagged, simply hose it off and the graffiti and wax melt away. After the sur- face dries, reapply the wax to the affected spot to restore protection. Graffiti on an unprotected painted Sur- face needs to be painted over, preferably with a color that closely matches the sur- rounding paint. People tend to do quick jobs and not match the paint. Don't follow the outline of the tag, but create a square, fill it in and let the paint blend to create the idea that there's never been a tag.
