Native student pursues
political science
By DEAN SIEMON
Shelton High School senior Jacob
Adams has been involved with his Na-
tive American roots during his high
school years.
Adams is president of the Native
Club at SHS and the president of the
Squaxin Island Tribe's youth council.
Adams said his goal was to help his
fellow Native American students in
education and acted as a peer coun-
selor his first two years in the Native
Club.
"I noticed that many Native youths
were not educated ... ones who don't
really care about school," Adams said.
With his father a member of the
Colville Tribe and his mother a mem-
ber of the Skokomish Tribe, Adams
chose to enroll as a member of the
Colville Tribe.
"Colville just has a little bit more
money," Adams said. "They can give
more money in grants."
Since his junior year, Adams has
been enrolled in the high school's
Running Start program has attended
Olympic College and is taking online
courses at the Northwest Indian Col-
lege in Bellingham.
Adams is scheduled to graduate
this spring with his high school diplo-
ma and his associate's degree.
"In the long run, I know it'll get me
ahead and I can start my life faster,"
Adams said.
Adams is taking courses like His-
tory, English and Spanish at Olympic
College and other Native American
courses at the Northwest Indian Col-
lege.
"If one school doesn't have the cred-
its I need for my associate's degree, I
can go to the other," Adams said.
Adams said he is interested in
studying political science and has tak-
en a week long training course with
Boys State, a program through Ameri-
can Legion.
"It's a club where they teach us
about politics and we build a govern-
Jacob Adams
ment from the ground up," Adams
said.
Adams said he would like to use an
education in politics and/or business to
help his tribe.
"I've always felt like, being a Na-
tive American, there are a lot of things
I can do to stand up for other Native
Americans and the Colville Nations,"
Adams said.
Adams' top two choices for college
are the University of Washington and
Seattle University.
"I don't want to go too far from my
family," he said. "I have the links in
Seattle so I won't be up there by my-
self."
Adams said he is proud of his up-
bringing. With his mother and father
gone, he is living with his grandmoth-
er.
"It was a lot of hard work, but I'm
glad I got through it," Adams said.
Adams said he will miss the fam-
ily and friend support when leaving
Mason County, but knows it is best to
move to the big city.
"I think [Shelton is] a good place
to grow up in and I think it's a good
place to retire in," Adams said. "But I
don't think it's a good place for the in
between."
