Stroke and Osteoporosis
Screening Coming
to Shelton
Residents living in and around the
Shelton community can be screened to
reduce their risk of having a stroke or
bone fracture. The Church of the Naza-
rene will host Life Line Screening on
February 3. The site is located at 1331
E Shelton Springs Roadd in Shelton.
Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.
Four key points every person needs
to know:
Stroke is the third leading cause of
death and a leading cause of perma-
nent disability.
Eighty percent of stroke victims had
no apparent warning signs prior to
their stroke.
Preventive ultrasound screenings
can help you avoid a stroke. Screenings
are fast, noninvasive, painless, afford-
able and convenient.
Screenings identify potential car-
diovascular conditions such as blocked
arteries and irregular heart rhythm,
abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hard-
ening of the arteries in the legs, which
is a strong predictor of heart disease. A
bone density screening to assess osteo-
porosis risk is also offered and is appro-
priate for both men and women.
Packages start at $139. All five
screenings take 60-90 minutes to com-
plete. For more information regarding
the screenings or to schedule an ap-
pointment, call 1-877-237-1287 or visit
our website at www.lifelinescreening.
com. Pre-registration is required.

Caring for Kailyn
Family and friends of Kailyn Mc-
Irvin are reaching out to the communi-
ty for their support as they raise funds
to help offset the high costs of Kailyn's
medical care.
They are sponsoring a chowder/chili
dinner and auction. The "caring for
Kailyn" benefit is planned on February
5, 2011 doors opening at 3 p.m. dinner
at 4 p.m. If you want to donate for the
auction please call Angle at 360-427-
7242 or Carolyn at 360-426-5420.
At the age of 13 Kailyn was diag-
nosed with a very rare metabolic disor-
der called Ornithine Transcarbamylase
Deficiency "OTC" disorder for short.
She has been hospitalized approxi-
mately 20 times and been in the ER
numerous times. Kailyn usually must
be transported to Seattle Children's
Hospital where she receives the correct
IV medication. Kailyn currently takes
96 pills a day and 24 ounces of a special
formula.
Kailyn has good insurance, but the
deductibles, ambulance transfers and
the lost wages and expense to be with
Kailyn becomes very expensive. Her
deductibles are high and prescription
costs alone are over $400 a month.
The family has been devastated both
emotionally and financially by this.
Kailyn had done her best to try and
lead a "normal" teen life. She was the
2010 Mason County Rodeo Queen and
dedicated herself to the honor between
stays in the hospital and times when
she was feeling ill. Making it to high
school graduation with classmates was
a major victory in June. Her goals are
to continue her education in as timely a
manner as her health allows.
Tickets are available at the door or
you can purchase them at Mary Mar-
tha's, Sage Book Store or Coffee Creek
Espresso for $20 couple, $12 per per-
son, $5 for children 12 and under. Car-
ing for Kailyn UCDF Association is a
non-profit organization for the purpose
of helping children with OTC and other
medical disorders by raising money to
help offset their medical expenses.
